Motherboard or CPU issue?

Hi there

I just wondered if someone could explain to me why the CPU LED on my D975XBX2 motherboard would light up, stay solid red and then system then power off.

Every few times I try booting it again I get 3 audible beeps and the system powers off.

Is it the CPU? (Pentium D940)??

This was an eBay deal so I am speculating the CPU, but wanted to be sure.

Thanks

Beeps have stopped....

When it boots the system does not post and about 3 to 5 secs in the red CPU LED light comes on and the system powers off.

bad cooler mount?

Would that really cause the warning light?

I removed the cooler, (stock Intel cooler) and re-seated the CPO Chip but no change in results. The system isn't on long enough to generate heat,....

Got me puzzled. Going to try pulling the CMOS battery and reset the board back to defaults and see that works...

beeps codes dont always direct to the correct problem i would boot without ram and then without gpu and see if you get different error codes
or vice versa

I had a mobo once that gave a beep code for cpu but it turned out to be a ram fault

I dont think i have ever come across a defective cpu usually mobo or ram or bad mounts on any component

if its second hand my guess is a bad oc fried the mobo

Yeah in all the builds I have ever done I have never seen this issue. I haven't tried with the CPU removed. I don't get any error codes as I get nothing coming up on the screen as the system doesn't post or remain powered on long enough.

To date I have tried:
1. Re-seating the CPU
2. Re-seated the RAM
3. Tried Two other sets of RAM
4. Tried single stick of each RAM module/set
5. I have pulled the CMOS battery for 20 minutes
6. Removed all connections except the CPU , Motherboard Power connections
7. Tried a different Video card

Little stumped now. Spoke with the seller who is certain the system worked previously.

Well I got it to boot. It was a heat issue... convoluted way I figured it out, but lucky I had a spare Arctic Cooler for LGA775 socket boards. Now have a new issue..not able to boot from USB? And according to the bios the CPU Temp is hovering around 80 degrees. I find that too be a little high...?

It is, but it isn't 80F it states 80C in the Bios.

Got an Arctic Cooling 11 Plus cooler mounted and 2 x 140 mm Top Exhaust Fans and a 120 mm Rear Exhaust. Sits at 78C according to the bios. Can't get lm-sensors or Windows Temp Monitors to pull up temp readings. Stats the Chips has no sensors (in windows)

Intel boards are notorious for stating CPU temps that are 10 degrees higher than what they should be. However, you do have a Presler and they do run a tad hot. Northwood, Prescott, and Presler do not have Digital Thermal Sensors unlike Core based processors. That's why programs like Core Temp and lm-sensors won't work with it. You are limited to using the thermal diode under the CPU for your temperature reading.
