My motherboard and windows report that my 512mb Samsung pc2700 stick is 256mb, why is that? I'm sure it's a 512mb stick. It says Bank 1 is used but not Bank 2...

this is on a Soltek p4x400 board

any ideas?

On a brandnew board w/ VIA chipset, hardware capabilities are there to use any flavor of 512-MByte DIMM. So either its 2nd side is bad, or the board's BIOS is doing something stupid.

I would agree. VIA chipsets can run even high density ram. Take it out and try one of the other 3 slots if you have not yet.

Also what kind of ram?? is it Samsung Chips on someone elses board or Samsung Chips and Board

Is it just not reporting the right RAM size in the POST, or is it anywhere you look in Windows/BIOS it reports it as the wrong size??

If you can, try the ram in someone else's PC. If it shows 256 there then there is something wrong with the ram.
