Motherboard keeps on shutting off randomly

I have an Asus P5P800s with a Pentium 4 530j in there. Everytime I try to install Windows XP, it just randomly shuts off when loading the files.

Now, my setup isn't exactly normal. It's quite... ghetto as you may call it. Basically, the motherboard is placed on a carpet floor, with the IDE HDD, optical drive, and the power supply basically sitting next to it, stacked ontop of each other. I'm using the power and reset button of the case from my main computer to power on and off the ghetto rig. Could this be the reason why the thing just keeps shutting off? There's 1gb (2x512mb) of DDR400 RAM in there if that matters at all.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and also, I tried with a different power supply, just to see if that was the problem. When I plugged everything in, powered it on, there is NO display. I unplugged everything, reset CMOS, plugged it back in, reseated the card, etc. I powered it on again, but this time, there is still no display, but the mtoherboard stopped responding to the power button. Any ideas?

EDIT2: Switched back to the old power supply. Same problems happened again. Motherboard would power on, fans would spin, but still no display. But this time, the CPU fan speed would fluctuate, I don't know if that has anything to do with the power being delivered to the board or something like that. Also, the board just shut off within 5 seconds of being powered on.

Is your cpu overheating? Have you made sure the CPU cooler is firmly attached to the mobo and there is not a load of dried up TIM on the CPU face preventing a decent contact.

To eliminate your "ghetto" power switch worries disconnect them and turn it on by carefully shorting the 2 pins that the power switch usually attaches to with a screwdriver head

Agree kbp--static, and heat.....

How do you set up a "ghetto" rig that doesnt involve putting it on the floor?

I tried doing this on a desk as well. It still doesn't work. There's no display, and the CPU fan seems to fluctuate a lot. Also, It shuts off after about 5-10 seconds of being powered on regardless of what drives/peripherals are attached to it. Removing the battery in the motherboard, then putting it back in doesn't seem to help either.

I would check the jumper to the bios,if its in the wrong spot it won't post.

Not always the case but i have bought a few computers in the pass for parts and due to user error this jumper was always placed wrong and well the machine was perfectly good.

Also possibly i would check your memory sticks...my rig wouldn't post when i first built it cause one of the sticks were bad...sometimes it would post.sometimes it wouldn't.

Hope this solves it:thumbsup:

What's the jumper to the bios? Well even so, I do not get any display. I tried two different AGP cards, both known to be working and it still doesn't display anything. I can't even see the ASUS splashscreen. And it just shuts off in 10 seconds after being powered on no matter what I try.
