Yeah, I can't really see tell from the pic, it just looks different. A bitter pic would help

Usually when a cap goes bad the top buldges outwards from the pressure inside. "K" vents are used by Rubycon and they don't really fail unless something goes really wrong (such as a bad PSU). Still I would think the board would probably work once the cap or caps are replaced.

Dang, man, you must have been pushing hard with that screwdriver. That one cap can be fairly easily replaced. Do a little reading on badcaps.net. It was linked above.

screwdriver?

Does the smell that initially came from the PSU mean most likely that is bad too?

And maybe the company mentioned in my sig had something to do with it. My APCs have been switching to battery a lot due to "noise" this week.

Hard to say.

If I had to guess I would think the PSU went bad and killed one or more of your caps since Rubycons just don't die on their own, if they are Rubycons that is.

It's also possible the PSU has nothing to do with it and PSU fans simply picked up the vapor from the cap venting and blew it out it's exhaust. Which could give the impression that the PSU was at fault.

Gave this more thought.

As I'm getting married in about 5 months, I should take this opportunity to upgrade while I can. ;)

Any recommended C2D boards with PATA + 4SATA, & lots of USB?

Congradulations on both counts :).

How about the Gigabyte GA-965P-S3?

nice.

My really old system I'm back to for now has a Gigabyte motherboard still running from 1999 (knock wood).

Got the parts yesterday, haven't had time to reinstall the OS yet.
Also, the IDE connector is far enough down it can barely reach the lowest bay for the DVD writer (and can't reach it if going to a drive first). Will probably end up putting the old IDE drive in my old PC.

What does the continous loud high pitch tone (like a beep but it doesn't end), mean that starts after POST? Didn't see anything about the tones on the motherboard manual. How do I get rid of it? The system continues booting while it is making that noise. It didn't make it the first time it was turned on, but instead complained about BIOS checksum error and waited for delete or other special key to be pressed on the initial screen. After going in the BIOS and resetting to defaults it boots but I get this annoying noise.

Also, the way the thermal compound is preapplied on the heatsink (Intel boxed Core 2 Duo) is wierd. It's in 3 rectangular sections with gaps between them. CPU temp reads 65-70C in the BIOS after just turning it on, and stabilizes in the mid 70s C, which seems way too high, used to around 40C with the X2. Maybe I've missed something in the HSF installation, which seemed less tight than normal with those plastic fasteners instead of the usual crazy-tight metal clips? Also odd is it takes a few seconds before the CPU fan starts spinning.

Could the beeping be because the case does not support monitoring system fan speed (no extra connector for it)?
