motherboard improving performance?

Right now I have an Athlon XP 1800+ w/ an Epox 8Kha+ and I was thinking about upgrading my motherboard. I had sorta just been settling when I got the Epox. I have always liked Asus boards. Would upgrading my board give me performance increases? Any suggestions?

for the cost you could probably get a faster XP for more performance increase than a new mobo would do you.

An upgrade to an nForce2 board might yield a 10% increase in performance in some applications, but like davegod said, for the same money you could get a new CPU that would provide more than a 10% increase. If I were you, I'd start by trying to overclock the CPU I've got.

it's upgrading out of parents wanting to know what i want for xmas and having no idea. Maybe I'll unlock my chip and get a new fan and heatsink since Im still running the stock one.

You could get up to a 20% increase by upgrading that mobo. To me that Epox is one of the best mobo's ever made for the Athlon. I loved it. But the AMD chipset is not big on performance. It is the stability king though. It would be worth upgrading from that mobo to a KT266a or higher chipset. Would get a nice performance boost.

Hmm, 20%, i wonder if there are any real world benchmarks out there. Old versus new, i'd love to see it.

If you are referring to the posters motherboard, the Epox 8KHA+ is already a KT266A chipset. Seen here.

dmw16 I really don't see a point for you to upgrade to a different motherboard unless you just want more features on it, i.e. Firewire, USB 2.0, Serial ATA, etc.

The CPU speed is a good decent speed now.

What is your video card and RAM?

when talking about a small performance margin with motherboards between brands, it's not quite a good idea to switch from the EPoX to an Asus, the EPoX will be just as fast if not faster, they are very quick boards. you can get a 333 chipset, but you won't see any improvements really unless you run your CPU @ 166 FSB. you'd see a bigger performance jump getting an XP2000+.
and it's alot least headaches to switch just the CPU.

Holy moly, 15% increase in some games from the amd 760-->kt266a. It should be wayyy more from the amd 760-->nforce2 :Q
