I've been tossing this idea around in my head now for a little while and been checking through the forums to see if any of this has come up before - Haven't seen any other threads on it...
I was thinking of a way to get a quiet (not necessarily silent) HTPC that boots quickly.
Has anyone tried using an AsRock mobo with the fastboot paired with a flash drive for O/S? 36gb flash drives are way way cheaper than SSD drives and since I'll be pulling media over the network storage isn't an issue - 4 or 8gb drive would probably be all I needed anyways so I can cut cost there as well.
I've got a copy of XP MCE for the O/S and an E8200 CPU, I'd probably pair this with a 4350 passive cool and some quiet case fans (YL 120s if they'll fit). I have no clue what HSF to use for the proc, and I haven't had much luck looking for quiet low profile HSF reviews in the Cases and Cooling section.
I figure the USB drive will cut down on hard drive noise and the AsRock fastboot will counter any slow booting issues I'd get from using the USB as my O/S drive.
Any thoughts on this? I've never done an HTPC before, but I've researched the USB O/S drive solution and I think its doable. I do have a free 2.5in SATA laptop drive that I could use that would be quieter than a 3.5 7200rpm drive, but I just like the idea of using the USB O/S drive.
Am I being completely retarded here? I'm especially looking for insight on the AsRock fastboot and AT members' success/failure with running USB drives as O/S drives.
Thanks,
