Motherboard for the future?

I'm considering getting a new motherboard and I've got a few questions. I'd need a board that supports DDR and an AMD XP. A good overclocker is a must. No RAID is needed. I was wondering if any new technology is around the corner that will change our motherboards. I'd hate to buy a new one now and have a different AMD chip come out that isn't Socket A or maybe new RAM comes out that doesn't work with these boards. Any advice?

In the 1st quarter of 2003, AMD will be releasing their new processor, Hammer. I have read AMD's Hammer FAQ that the new processor will require a new socket and completely new chipsets. One of the most interesting things about the Hammer is that it will integrate some of the chipset's functions onto the processor, including memory control, multiprocessing control and IO functionality. The memory controller for instance. This feature can increase memory-to-processor transfer rates greatly. The Hammer's data bandwidth is predicted to be 19.2GB/s, much faster than the current Athlon XP bandwidth of 2.1GB/s or the Intel's 4.2GB/s on it's 533MHz FSB processors. I read in another thread that AMD officals do expect to put a Hammer processor into a system and keep the price of the system under $1100.

Around Christmas is going to be a busy time for the industry. It looks like socket A's days are numbered, so I'm playing the wait and see game. Hope this is helpful. Good luck finding a system for yourself. Peace.

Thanks a lot for your post. That helps me out very much. I just ordered a XP 1800 for my current system (Shuttle AK31A) which should tie me over until the Hammers come down in price. Thanks again. 🙂
