I have a Velocity Micro ProMagix PC and I'll be upgrading the processor, motherboard and memory.

I'll be getting an Intel i7-950 processor. Can anyone suggested a motherboard?

I'm thinking of either:

  1. the MSI X58 Pro-E or
  2. the Asus P6T
I do NOT do gaming. My wife uses Computer Aid Design (CAD) and architecture software and I use MS Office 2007 and math software.

But I know little about personal computers so any suggestions or comments will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello, and welcome to AnandTech Forums.

Both boards you're considering have been received well from many forum members. When it comes to performance, all boards tend to offer similar performance so I think you can rest assured that you will not lose performance by choosing a certain board.

A lot of time, we consider motherboards'

- Overclock-friendliness
- Reliability
- Features
- Layout
- Customer service and overall experience

All X58 boards tend to be very good. Some of the more common issues popped up on this specific chipset in the past are memory compatibility and PSU compatibility. I'd suggest once you pick a board do a bit of research on memory and PSU issue with the board you've chosen. Performance will be exceptionally good especially if you're upgrading from a 2+ year old CPU.

Thanks very much for your response.

I'll make a post when I decide on which board and when I get the system set up.

For CAD, I would say load up on a decent video card and as much ram as you can afford.
