Motherboard for Athlon64 3000+?

I am not sure whether to go with the nForce3 boards or the VIA boards... I am looking for gaming performance and stability. I don't plan to overclock, so it's a pretty moot point, though if it's available maybe I will at a later time.

Any suggestions? I saw the review on the A-Open board, and it looks like a good choice but tell me if I'm wrong. The price is good with the features, that's for sure.

Thanks!

Well, the ASUS K8V I have is very well regarded by many. I have also heard good things about the Aopen AK86-L (I think thats it) and there is also a nice one fron ASROCK using the SIS 755-2 chipset (NFS4 can vouch for that, he has one)

I say stay away from gigbyte and MSI. I have heard a lot of bad things about those.

Make sure you get GOOD memory. The Hyperx in my sig works great. Mushkin PC3500 level1 also works good.

hi,
the aopen ak89 max (nf3-150 chipset) did get a really stellar review from anandtech.
here
and as you say, the price is right. if you'd rather go via chipset,
i/m using the aopen ak86-l (via chipset) and it's been very stable and fast with no problems at all.
also reviewed well here.

i dont think you can go worng with either one.
good luck

Where are all these complaints coming from? I have the MSI K8T board and it's been absolutely rock solid. Those I have spoken to that have the board are quite happy with it as well. Read the reviews on the MSI board. At stock speeds, it's one of the fastest A64 mobos out there, especially for gaming.

Besides the weak overclock I got with my 3000+ The AOpen AK86-L has been nothing but stable. I highly recommend it!

my friend just got an Aopen mobo. We installed today on his A64 3000+. It seems stable so far, 🙂. Quality of the board is excellent... the only issue we had, was due to him having a weak ps. He just ordered a nice fortran from newegg to fix that problem. If I had to get a mobo right now, I would acutally be looking @ the Aopen line, unfourtanitly I am holding out for the MSI K8N.

Most A64 boards perform similarly because of the on-die memory controller. Buy a board based on features and get a known brand. Around here people seem to recommend MSI, Asus, and AOpen the most when it comes to A64's. I'm sure most boards will be fine though, Abit, Chaintech, Gigabyte, DFI, Shuttle, Epox, etc.
