Hello.

I am helping my little brother buy a nice comp. I have decided (yes, he lets me do the deciding :) on an Athlon 64 processor, but I do not know which motherboard to pick.

He needs a very stable board, and are willing to spend up to about 175$. He will not be getting into overclocking. I think SATA is a must, and onboard LAN is nice. Decent onboard sound is a bonus, but a SB Live can be had for 25$ or something like that.

I have no experience with chipsets for AMD processors, and thus no particular preference.
Any suggestions?

There are al kinds of options.
you first have to decide which socket type you want (s939 or s754), this affects both CPU decision as well as motherboard.
you then have to decide which chipset you want, but there are only 2 real options. (NVIDIA and VIA)

most motherboards have everything you want listed though.

LAN is always included, as well is SATA for the most part.

I love my Soltek SL-K8AN2E-GR for example... fantasic board.

ASRock K8S8X is the top choice, no A64 mobo that's more stable or as fast. Second choice would be the Asus K8N-E Deluxe.

The chaintech vnf-250 doesn't have the cool and quiet function working which turned me off to look at the Asrock k8s8x instead. Dollar for dollar, nothing beats the Asrock. The soltek/Asus would be my next choice for 754.

Oynaz, there are tons of articles about 754/939 sockets/chipsets on this website. Short story is 754 runs almost as fast as 939 and you don't need dual memory sticks but 939 is more upgrade capable.
