Motherboard fan noise in ubuntu, but quiet in windows.

I noticed something for the first time last night. I was playing with the new ubuntu on my new computer (I spend most of my time in windows playing oblivion and really havn't used this computer for anything else yet) and I noticed that the computer was noisy. It turned out to be the motherboard fan. I booted back into windows and the fan was noisy all the way until windows finishes booting, then it scales back and quiets down.

My question is, what do I need to install to get that working in ubuntu? I've never messed with fan speed controls before in linux (my computers have always been quiet enough for me).

Check the power management in Linux... It obviously isn't working correctly. My Suse 10.1 install hardly ever shifts into a higher fan speed, because it doesn't need to... On my PC Suse runs lots cooler than Windows.

Is Windows doing CPU frequency scaling? If so, most likely the fans are hardware controlled and the CPU is running hotter in Linux.

Its not the CPU fan, its the motherboard fan. As a test I turned off cool and quiet, and the motherboard fan still gets quieter in windows then in linux. I think I may have to install lm_sensors and use its fan control to control my motherboard chipset fan based on temps.
