I have an ECS K7SEM motherboard (mb) that was in a computer I bought in Sept 2002 from an individual who built it. At that time, I did not know as much as I do now about computers and did not recognize that the CPU fan was not connected to the CPU fan connector on the motherboard.
Not long after buying the computer, I decided to add a case fan and found that the connector on the motherboard for a case fan would not work. Since the guy who built the computer had put splitters on two of the IDE power connectors to provide power to both an IDE connector and a 3-pin connector, I connected the case fan to one of those 3-pin connectors. At that time, I also realized that the builder had connected the CPU fan to the other splitter, not the CPU Fan connector on the mb. I carefully tested the CPU fan connector on the mb, turning power on just long enough to see whether the CPU fan would run. It did not, so I hooked it back up to the connector on the splitter.
I have continued to use the computer that way, i.e., with the fans connected to the splitter connectors, and that works fine. The only disadvantage seems to be that I can not get fan RPM info; to get that, the fans would have to be connected to the mb.
I wish I knew why the fan connectors on the mb do not work. My best guess is that there's a defect in this mb. Does anyone know of any other possible causes?
