my brother's computer has been working fine for 1 year+

last week, his cursor would freeze in windows xp 5 minutes after starting up. it would lock and unlock every 10 seconds or so. it seemed like the hard drive was locking up as well.

a few days after the freezing problem started, the computer would fail to get through bios. the memory check is successful, then the drive detect usually fails, and it stops there. if it gets through the drive detect, i get an error message that the nvidia boot loader failed.

it is a biostar mobo with nvidia chipset. i've already checked all the connections inside.

am i looking at a new mobo for christmas?

thanks for your help,
fred

How did you "check the connections"? Never just check, pull EVERTHING that connects to the mobo off and put it back on....especially the IDE cables.

I think the mobo is fine, it sounds a lot like a failing hard drive. Download the drive manufacturers diag program and run it.
