mobo is asrock x58 extreme
http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/X58 Extreme/

it reports pci express 2.0

video card is nvidia 670
http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GTX670DC22GD5/

it reports pci express 3

video drivers nvidia 326.41 beta (prone to kernel mode failures)

gpu-z says i am running pci 1.1 x 16 lanes.

is this an issue with the drivers?
I realize that pci express 2.0 x 16 will only give me a ~5% improvement over pci express 1.1 but would like to figure out where the pci express 1.1 number is coming from.

The ? next to it in GPU-Z says some cards switch to a slower mode to save power.

yeah, once the graphics card starts rendering something beyond the desktop it will switch up to 2.0.

GPUz has a built in test to prove this, just click on the question mark and then the start render button and see what it changes to.
