motherboard design

Just thinking the other day...why aren't motherboards reversed with the processor in the lower half of the board and the add-in cards on the top?? Shouldn't the processor be toward the bottom so that a case fan blows cold air over it and then the hot air from the processor rises to the top of the case and blown out by either the PS fan or a case fan in the back? It just doesn't make sense to me that the hottest component in the computer is toward the top where hot air from other components will just add to the heat. Your guys' thoughts??

You do have a point, but then there wouldn't be any room for 12 in PCI cards. If you moved the PCI cards to the top of the mobo, you would have to move the 3.5 inch bays to the bottom or make a bigger case. That would also make it difficult to set the HD as master, and a CD drive as slave, because the IDE cables wouldn't reach back up to the top of the case.

As long as you have a good HSF, I don't think it will make a big difference.

i'm sure that it doesn't make THAT big of a difference, but it would be nice to have the cold air from the intake fan in the front rush over the heatsink. i think that the cases could be designed to accomodate such a design. maybe i'll have to do some photoshop work or something to put together a prototype case/motherboard design that will allow this

what is to stop someone from reversing teh fan at teh back of teh case to blow fresh air in? I might have done that my self, I know i thought about it.

If you did that, you would have to also reverse the one on the bottom in the front. This wouldn't make much sense, because heat rises.
