Brand new ASUS x99 AII motherboard, core i7 6800k and EVGA Supersonic 650w G2 PSU.

My motherboard manual is not very detailed and pretty sparse. It says "!! DO NOT forget to connect BOTH of the 4-pin and 8-pin EATX12 V power plug"

My plan is only to overlock to 4ghz, maybe 4.2ghz tops. Do I need to plug in the 4 pin (in addition to the 8pin) ?

My psu only comes with 1x8 pin cpu power cable. But there is also a Y adapter that splits the 8pin into an 8pin and 4+4pin. Should I use the Y adapter and plug the main 8 pin in and one of the 4 pins that split off, to accomplish what my manual says?

This is all coming from one 8-pin cpu connection on the power supply side. Whats the point of the Y splitter if its still coming from the single cable?

I'm so confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Just plug in the 8-pin CPU cable. The other 4-pin is optional for supplemental power for heavy overclocks, SLI, etc. If your system is stable, you are fine. If not, back off of the overclock or get a beefier PSU.

Some power supplies (including the EVGA 750w G2) come with two CPU connections that you would want to get if you are pushing the overclock.

This is quite a common question for these x99 boards, so there are tons of various forum posts around.

Thanks for the help. I actually came across both threads you linked in my research and I didn't think we're definitive enough. I'll stick with the single 8pin, thanks for your guidance.
