I have a GA-7VRXP and just bought a 2600+ after bios update and lots of headaches i can only see a 2000+. If i turn up the clock speed to 166 it becomes unstable and now i cannot get into windows, i must reinstall.

any help would be greatly apreaciated.
thanx

Hi and welcome to AT. First, it would be helpful if you provide more details about your system. List memory (size and type), power supply, etc. Also, which bios did you update to and which did you have before? Have you tried flashing to either the original BIOS or to any other version? Did you clear the CMOS when installing the new CPU? Did you change anything else during this upgrade? Was the upgrade of the BIOS required in order to use that CPU?

EDIT:
Just checked this page and you may be out of luck, unless I'm missing something here. According to that, you can run that cpu only at 266 which would mean it wouldn't recognize the full speed (the problem you are now experiencing). It says it is NOT rated for that cpu @ 333 (166mhz).

Well, in a nutshell it means your MB cannot "see" that CPU at it's true speed. It will NOT run a 2600+ CPU at 166 FSB; only 133. (133 translates to 266 and 166 translates to 333).That is why it "sees" a 2000+ CPU at 133 and when you turn up the speed to 166, so that it can "see" the CPU at 2600+, all hell breaks loose. It won't fly. At least that is according to the MB's website. Did you check with them before to see if that cpu would work? Have you communicated with any others that have done this successfully? I suppose it could be either the RAM or CPU but I doubt it as the CPU list says it isn't supported.

What MB revision do you have. That makes a big difference. I was assuming version 1x.

EDIT:Never mind. It doesn't make any difference. That BIOS will enable the 2600+ to be used but only using 266. So, it will not be running at full speed. Stupid way to do a BIOS.

The thing that bothers me is that when i check the version on my m/b it is a 1.1, that version is not listed on the site. and if you check the bios updates here it says it has the fix for 2400+ and 2600+

Yes but did you read thoroughly?
Recognize correctly AthlonXP 2400+, 2600+ CPU (FSB 266, 0.13u).
Catch the 266 part? That's the deal killer. Yes, you can use it but not at the full rated speed.

Problem is, XP2400 and XP2600 are the 'crossover' points between 266MHz FSB and 333MHz FSB processors. As per the previous post, your m/b with that BIOS only supports the 266MHz version of the XP2600, not all versions (i.e. not 333MHz FSB).

There are two different 2600+ cpus available, one runs at 133 (rare and hard to find) and is probably the one meant for your mobo.

The other is a 166 part and probably the one you are trying to use.

Try to return it and get a 2400+ to avoid any further confusion.
