Motherboard Compatibilities?

Alright, my friend claims that his p4p800 motherboard cant use certain types of ram. at first I figured he meant physically, like amount of pins and such because thats same with all motherboards, but when he started saying p4p800's cant use patriot and like 6 other brands which are almost identical to what he has(ddr400, pc3200, 184) it didnt make sense. How could one brand name with identical physical properties be different.
 
It's not that you can't use those with them but rather than Corsair doesn't support them and they haven't been tested. Which simply means there could be latency problems with them or small compatability issues. Normally, this isn't a problem but it's always something to definately take into advisement when building or upgrading systems.
