motherboard\chip that supports registered RAM

I dunno what part of, but my friends FX-53 +SK8n is toast, chips pins are all bent up (perhaps the mobo still works but just considering the thermal paste on the board I don't have much faith in it, yea I have decided that recomending he bring it to a computer shop was a bad choice)

So now its time to hunt for a new chip and motherboard.

Unfortunatly the FX-53 needed registered memory so now I am at a loss as to what I am looking for.
Can registered memory work in an unbuffered system? Do I need to buy an opteron/intel server board? If I put a 939 opteron in a system will it then be able to run the registered dimms he has?

Basically I would want to keep the RAM he has now so please put me in the right direction in search
