Motherboard beeps?

I've just recieved my abit Va-20 and should be recieving the cpu next week. Since I was bored, I decided to assemble the pc without the cpu at hand. When I turn it on, everything works fine but I hear no beeps from the motherboard. I know I need my cpu in order for the computer to post, but is this normal?
 
Of course. Who do you think operates the beeper? Right, the BIOS - which in turn is pure software that obviously needs a CPU to operate.
