motherboard and memory for 8gb with qx6700 ?

My first post to the anandtech forums!

I'm attempting to build a number crunching linux machine for my lab, and I'm trying to figure out the best memory and motherboard that's been known to work that would support 8gb of ram with the qx6700.

On newegg, I see that there are G. Skill and Geil memory that come in DDR2-800 2x2gb form. Has anyone had experience with these and are any known to definitely work with certain motherboards?

Thanks!

If I was looking for something to support that much ram I'd go for a machine that will hold ecc or fb-dimms - more server orientated, should mean greater stability. Probably dual xeon over qx6700...

I'd definitely go for a Xeon level system, and a server mobo. Much more stability (especially with the associated drivers), and hardware geared towards that type of setup.

Thanks for the replies!

I have a stupid question with regards to server xeon hardware. On newegg, I see woodcrest cpus that are 1U/active and 2U/passive. For a dual xeon setup would I get one active and one passive xeons? I'm not sure how to build or pick server hardware. Are there any good tutorials online?

Thanks!

Active and passive refers to the cooling type for the processor. You would want to get active cooling for your CPUs--in fact, I would recommend getting aftermarket coolers for them at that. The Thermalright SI-9XV coolers are wonderful, if you can find them in stock (although I'm not sure if they fit on the 775 socket Xeons). Passive is only recommended in specific setups that have high airflow through the case. You can get an EATX case, and not have to worry about the 1U - 8U type rackmounts.
