Why is it that when you don't put on the grounders and you just screw the motherboard against the case, the motherboard doesn't boot or power up?
 
They are called standoffs, and the point is to keep it from grounding to the case.
The backside of the motherboard has thousands of exposed solder traces that carry electric current, if any one of them is shorted to ground the mobo won.t operate
