Hi,

why are some motherboards restricted to a maximum
cpu speed ? I dont mean the common voltage problem
right now, let me try to explain it :

A mainboard can run a P3-700 without problems. Why
cant it run a p3-800 or p3-1000 ? I wonder what the
mainboard is "seeing" from the CPU. Isnt the CPU just
connected to the mainboard via the Front Side Bus,
and everything what the cpu is doing on the socket
doesnt care the mainboard a single bit ?

My guess is that the mainboard doesnt see what multiplier
the chip is running, so it should work fine with all
CPUs that i put on the socket and that are connected
via the front side bus.

I have exactly that problem here .. I have a dual board
that can run dual p3-650, but wont work with dual p3-750,
850, 1000. It will only work for an hour and then crash
the system ("Hardware malfunction - please contact your
hardware vendor"). Anybody an idea ?

Harry
