Hi Everyone,
I recently purchased a mach speed - p4mdt socket 478 motherboard and a p4 - 2.4 800 FSb socket 478 with hyperthreading chip. I am concerned now that they are not compatable, I haven't received them yet but the order is due in any day. I am trying to build my husband a computer for Christmas (shhh) and want everything to work well. Can anyone help me?

According to their web site, this motherboard will not support any 800mhz p4C cpus. The maximum fsb is 533mhz.

Also, what memory have you purchased to go along with this? For a P4C cpu running a 800mhz, you need PC3200 as a minimum.

This motherboard has onboard video which will not be sufficient for anything except web surfing and word processing. If you plan on doing any graphics or games, you need a dedicated video card.

thats what I was afraid of.

the memory I had purchased is 256MB DDR 266 PC2100 CL2.5 32x8 1.25 SPKT 184-Pin DIMM SPECTEK

my husband basically does just work on his computer, but you are right maybe I should get one that doesn't have everything onboard. Do you have any suggestions which boards I could get to go along with the chip?

If you are going to keep the cpu, a good motherboard would be the Asus p4p800. It will support the cpu you bought and it's onboard sound is ok. For a video card, look at the ATI 9600 or an Nvidia card with an fx 5600. These are middle of the road cards which will do what you want and have a little left over power for an occasional game or graphic.

Next, you need PC3200 memory. If you plan to run Windows XP, 512mb is much better than 256. In any case, you need 2 identical sticks 128x2 or 256x2 so that you can run in dual channel mode. Kingston and Corsair are two good manufacturers. They have kits which come with 2 matched sticks to make it easier to run dual channel. You don't have to buy low latency, but just make sure it is at least pc3200.
