Hello,

This is my first post so here goes. I need to replace my motherboard and cpu. I have a PNY 7600GS AGP 2.0 512 MB video card that I recently purchase before I knew my older system was completely shot. I would like to use this card as well as the other items from my older machine. So I guess the motherboard I'm looking for would be able to handle the older technology and the new. I've looked at various websites - Newegg, TigerDirect etc. Needless to say I'm confused

Old system:

Leadtek motherboard - K7nCR18D
AMD Athlon XP 2100 DDR-400/333
Mid Tower (I think this means ATX form?)
Western Digital 80GB HD 7200 RPM Ultra (also have a Seagate 80 GB HD)
ATA-100 8MB Cache Buffer
PNY Ram 1GB

I would greatly appreciate any advice or information on this.

Thank you

P.S. I've been looking at these motherboards & CPU combos. The Newegg specs only say 1x AGP 4X/8X and I've asked them if its 8 AGP 2.0 compatible - they can't answer that question, I've tried twice to find this out :frown: The TigerDirect stuff tells me its AGP 3.0 and I think I read somewhere its always backward compatible?

BIOSTAR NF325-A7 Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 ATX AMD Motherboard

EPOX EP-8KRAI Pro Via Socket A ATX Motherboard and an AMD Duron 1.60GHz OEM Processor

Asus K8V-X SE Via Socket 754 ATX Motherboard and an AMD Athlon 64 3300+ 2.40GHz OEM Processor

Asus A8V Via Socket 939 ATX Motherboard and an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz OEM Processor

Mach Speed X-Caliber PT88BS Pro Via Socket 775 ATX Motherboard and an Intel Pentium 4 524 3.06GHz OEM Processor

Mach Speed X-Caliber PT88BS Pro Via Socket 775 ATX Motherboard and an Intel Celeron D 351 3.20GHz OEM Processor

So many options... inexpensive is good but I do not mind paying a little more for something that will allow me to upgrade into newer devices.

Thanks again..

Well, if you're looking to keep your processor, you need a board like this. If you'd like to get a new one, the cheapest would probably be to get the Athlon64 3400+ + free mobo combo at newegg. I believe the gigabyte board that comes with the S754 deal would let you back clock your memory down to 266 or 333, whichever your memory is.

PNY 7600GS AGP 2.0 512 MB
As in GeForce 7600GS 512MB?? This is an AGP3.0 graphics card supporting up to AGP 8x, not AGP 2.0 (which supports only up to AGP 4x).

Yeah but the minimum requirement is AGP 2.0 - that's what it says on the box :) and that was part of my confusion. I have another thread in the Highly Technical forum asking for help in understanding what that all meant.

Anyhow, I appreciate all the recommendations/ advice. I went with the Newegg deal mobo/cpu for $100 (ish). It just arrive today.. so I'm excited!! YAY I hope the install goes ok

Thanks again!
