Motherboads with Promise controllers built in question...

Do these motherboads (Asus P3V4X or Asus CUSL2) take about the same time to boot like a SCSI controller does? or is it the same as a regular motherboard with ATA33 controller built in? Thank you.

I have an ASUS P3V4X, and it doesn't have a Promise controller. It uses the VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset (694X/596B). It supports UDMA 33/66. No RAID support.

The ASUS CUSL2 also does NOT use a Promise controller. The ICH2 takes care of it.

I have a BXMaster and it uses the the Promise Ultra 66 controller built in. Its great!!!! NO PROBLEM what so ever with my Quantam fireball 20 gig udma 66 72000 HD.

But, how long does it take to boot? Does it go thru the process of detecting the hard drives as a SCSI card does? Thank you.

Well, its tough to say if you don't have the model of the SCSI card or the Promise card. I know that the onboard ATA100 on my A7V takes less time to initialize than the Adaptec 2940UW I have on the other comp. This could be due to the fact that 2940UW has two SCSI busses with 7 devices each (for a total of 14) while the Promise controller only has a capacity of four drives. Both of these cards init LOT faster than the 2940 (not UW) on my dad's comp. All three of these cards thrash my even older Adaptec card in my P120.

So in general, its tough to tell. Each card varies. BIOS settings (for the card is available) can also greatly affect init speed.
