Very sad. :(

A 25-year-old mother-of-one who survived a car crash on Sunday morning has died after going back to the vehicle to grab her purse, police claim.
Brittany Leith, mother of a three-year-old girl, was left completely uninjured when her Nissan hit the center median and flipped over onto its roof on Long Island's Southern State Parkway at 3.54am.
However, after clambering out of the wreckage through a cracked window and being helped to the roadside by other drivers, Leith went back to her car to collect her belongings.
As she walked back, she was hit and instantly killed by another car on the highway

People aren't thinking anymore these days. Its really frustrating.

She didn't even realize she was lucky to survive the initial accident and tempted fate running across the highway.

What's frustrating about Darwinism? I would say it's what's best for humanity, except she already passed on those amazing genetics.

Another obtuse and scientifically inaccurate interpretation of how natural selection works. I hope you never reproduce.

She was probably in shock from the accident. She likely wasn't thinking clearly when she made the decision to go back.

What's wrong with you?

Exactly. She was probably in shock and she just made a terrible decision. We are all only human, and we all have the capacity to make good and bad decisions.

I was driving with my dad last winter on an icy two lane road and we witnessed a head on collision. Oncoming car crossed over the double yellow due to excessive speed and ice and crashed into the car in front of us. We got out to assist and I had to repeatedly pull my dad out of the icy roadway. It's weird, he normally has great common sense, but I guess anyone can have a moment where they're not thinking.

My wife wrecked her motorcycle while we were out riding. We got her help and after she was taken to the hospital I picked her bike up. I was sitting on it talking to the officer when he asked me for something. I got off the bike and it dropped to the pavement and almost threw me to the ground. I was still in shock from watching her wreck and I forgot to put the kickstand down.

Slightly different than crossing a highway at 4am, but yeah, point taken. If she was concussed that may have added to the issue on top of the shock.

I will honor your request by keeping all the toys for myself. Instead of waiting for police/fire assistance to get her purse from the vehicle she didn't think enough of her consequences. She didn't think enough.

Wow. What an asshole response.

Like none of you would go back and try to get belongings after an accident...

That's terrible.

This almost happened to me several years ago--driver of our car plowed into the back of a truck stopped in the middle of the I40, just at the end of a blind turn in the left lane. We were all fine, but 3 of us climbed out and went to chill on the center median as firetrucks and such were starting to arrive.

As soon as I realized that we were basically sitting on that very same blind curve in the left lane of a 70mph highway with no emergency markers out yet, some drunk driver came plowing through that lane, whizzed by us, and struck the median about 6 feet past where we were sitting (that guy climbed out of his car and ran into the woods, leaving blood on his steering wheel. He was found later that morning, which is why I know he was drunk). Had I not pulled my legs in, I'm pretty sure I would have lost them.

A 25 year old single mother of a toddler who was out at 4AM on a Sunday morning hit the median on a parkway. In order to hit the median in that area you need to “avoid traveling in a straight fucking line”.

Toxicology will show if she was under the influence or not. She works at a Hair Salon in Bablyon (where she lives) so unless she is also bartending my guess is that she was out late partying and either fell asleep at the wheel or was under the influence.
Usually, midnight to 4AM Sunday is peak drunk driving time and Southern State is a hot spot for weeding out idiots. However, she wasn't close to those sections that weed out the shit\drunk\idiot drivers.

People told her to stay put and she walked out onto the parkway anyway.

You missed this part.
According to the New York Post, a police car which arrived minutes later was also struck by a passing car and a state trooper was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The people in that area are just terrible drivers...

Sucks. This happens way too much. People need to learn to slow the fuck down when they see an accident scene or any situation where someone is stopped. There are countless police dashcam videos of cars being swept completely off the road when pulled over. People drive faster than it is safe for the conditions. What hurts my brain is watching southern people handle a little bit of snow. Complete morons behind the wheel.

Yeah the article I read about this mentioned that a cop following up to this accident also had his car, and himself, hit too. Terrible fucking drivers around there, apparently. Well... I'd venture to guess that's true everywhere.

The article I read also had a quote from the mother of the girl killed, blaming those who helped her and/or those around her for not grabbing her and barring her from going back to the car.
