mother frakking power surge(or psu)

Senior member
well a power surge this morning took out my entire system (frakking odd), or my psu fried my system . Now It's day one without a gaming pc and I'm already missing it . I start my new job on Sunday and I'll get paid two weeks after that and I'm looking at $250-270ish to buy a new platform . what do you guys think I should get ?
I have two systems I have my eye on to be my system for the forseeable future, which seems better ? http://pcpartpicker.com/user/theblackdawn/saved/2jZe
or
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/theblackdawn/saved/2jZ4 ? thanks for your guys' help

I don't have the money to buy it right now like you suggested though lol .

sorry, by 'now' i actually meant in 2 weeks when you had the money

then when you have MORE money (even later on) you can drop in a nice i5 or something

I had a thermaltake tr2 700w psu take out a whole system that included a 2600k,a high end p67 asus mobo and even a gtx580 back in 2011.

Built a rig last year that had a 3770k and dual gtx670s,the pc was at my wifes cousins house when the whole thing including my 37'' t.v was stolen from a break in lol, talk about luck huh?

Hoping the rest of 2013 ends up being lucky unlike 2011 and 2012,so i know your pain Op.

elite 460 my bad

the specs on that are 'interesting'

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171046

12V1 & 12V2 are 216W each
but only 324W combined
+3.3V & +5V & +12V 378W combined

-12V - 9.6W
+5VSB - 12.5W

378+9.6+12.5 = 400W (theoretically)

yet they sell it as a 460W power supply

no PFC
manual 110/220V selection

a similar experience (power supply blowing out all attached components) is why i no longer buy cheap power supplies. I can't afford it 🙁

wow I'm sorry man I can't imagine the frustration .

Ironic isn't it ? I knew it really wasn't 460 but I was drawing less than 200 atw and the thing was $20 afr so I couldn't pass it by .

as for the i5 proposition, I can't see myself spending $80 only to spend $200+ later when I can settle for a slightly inferior experience for half price . Holiday season is coming up (along with my 3 year anniversary) and I want to make it special .

The same applies to the Pentium vs the i3.

For general cpu performance, the Pentium is going to offer you 80% of the performance for half the price.

Now if you're talking about gaming, well I would apply that $70 difference to a real video card

$110 - $15 rebate Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 GHz edition 1GB DDR5

makes the total $297 - $25 rebate = $272

or if that's slightly too high,
$100 - $20 rebate MSI GTX 650OC

also, are you sure the ram on your old system is bad?

I have a backup 7850, hdd, disk drive, etc . so that's no issue . Pentiums choke heavily on bf3, crysis 3, and alot of other threaded games whereas the i3 and fx6300 (especially the 6300) take them with ease . I think I'm leaning towards the 6300 system after mulling it over with some friends . I mean it's 33 more dollars, but look what that gives you ...

Given the tight budget, you don't want to be picking out specific parts too far in advance. Deals shift all the time and you want to get what's good when you have money in hand.

Maybe I missed it, but do you have a spare PSU that you can use? Have you tested your HDD, SSD, ODD, etc to make sure that they're still working?

hdd is gone, ram is gone, pretty sure psu is gone too, but I don't want to test it for fear of ruining other people's components, idk about my odd as I have like five laying around and they're cheap . The redeeming factor is I have backup a hdd, 7850, and as I mentioned several odds . So all I have to invest in is a new platform .

Well, seems like it is time to definitively scratch the Elite 460W off the "safe" list. Still not as utterly awful as a Diablotek or Logisys, but definitely too risky a buy. It wasn't that great elsewhere anyway, with poor ripple and noise control and a 1-year warranty. Hell, the extra 60W is fluff and it performs exactly the same as its 400 watt sibling.

That said, if you are fearful of a recurrence, it is much better to invest in protection upstream the PSU and get a high-end line conditioner rather than go overkill purchasing a 100+ dollar PSU. The line conditioner "fixes" irregularities in the AC power delivered to the PSU.

So it sounds like you need to include a new PSU in your budget as well.
