On thursday(tomorrow) i should be receiving a new motherboard, ram and processor. Everything else will remain the same. Will reinstalling my copy of XP Pro cause problems, such as during activation? I think i read somewhere that when upgrading the cpu or motherboard you have to unregister your copy by calling in and the reactivating the key. Is this even a concern? I dont want to have to call in to activate seeing how it seems to take for ever for some people and i only have cell phone minutes to use. Plus it seems like a big waste of time... Yes this is a legal copy purchased through my school. (I love education software discounts...)

What do you guys do when reinstalling xp on a new computer?

Thanks

You will probably have to call Microsoft. It shouldn't take long to reach them (by all accounts I've read anyhow).

You will have a chance to try to activate on line first. If it does not work, it will give you a number to call. It will be toll-free in North America. It is 24-hour service. It is very likely that you will be able to activate on line. Unless, you do not want to.
Registration has nothing to do with it. You do not even have to register.

If this is a legal copy, there is no reason for the call to take long. They ask why is it thatv you have to re-activate. You say because you are upgrading the motherboard. That is the end of it. They will give you a number that you type in and you are done.

You said that you are replacing your Mobo, Pro, and Mem. Not the Hdd so y would you need to reinstall the os? And you can back up your activation if you want. Can't remember where i saw it but you can search it.

If this is what you are talking about, I don't believe it works.

Also, if his network card is a part of his motherboard, changing the mobo and the processor is enough to require re-activation anyway (the mac card has 3 votes and the CPU has 2, while only 4 negative votes necessitates re-activation).

Look for
"How does product activation determine tolerance? In other words, how many components of the PC must change before I am required to reactivate"?

If it's been installed on your current machine more than 4 months, you should be able to reactivate online without any issues or need to call in.

I have never had a repaired install work very well. Besides, on basically a new computer its easier to trouble shoot with out old drivers in the way if something comes up. I will search on how to back up the activation...thanks for the tip and info you guys.

Anyways, had to call microsoft. During install it said i was over my limit of activated computers, which was one. 6 minutes 9 seconds. Not bad considering i had to speak in a 42 digit number (might have been more) to the computerized system and then a lady had to speak another 42 digit number back to me.

New computer (stuff) is running great. Cpu is hotter than what i am used to but well within limits. (Forgot to order arctic silver so i had to use cheap stuff as a place holder) and i got a chance to replace a fan on my psu, and take out the screen guards so it slides out easy. Still need to cut out a fangrill thats blocking air, but i have to take motherboard off tray, which is annoying.
