For gaming, P3s will do you a little better.. Get a 700E cD0 OC the hell out of it on a Abit SH6. you should be able to hit 170mhz+ FSB on that thanggg.. this thang will be a monster.. then you're ready to rock and roll happy gaming. how's that grab ya..

170 fsb? I haven't heard of any that high, have heard in the mid 160's. What kind of memory are you using and what you cooling your northbridge with?

Since when was a P3 ever faster? I had (now I don't) equally clocked CPUs, one P3 and one Tbird. P3 is lucky to keep up with the Duron let alone the Athlon. Yeah, there is one or two games out there that is faster on a P3, but I don't play them. Go AMD more Mhz for the $$. That alone makes AMD better. However if you going to O/C I recommend the Asus A7V133 (KT133A) becuase O/C on the MSI is not easy (I have one.) .

EDIT: Just a cursory PW check shows that a Athlon 900 is about the same price as a 733, no way can a 733 can keep up.

Oh crap!.. more AMD fans bashing innocent Intel guy like me. shhhhit.... Ok to those newbies(who posted after me), read more about the "new stepping" of P3 700E and the Mobo I mentioned above. And read carefully what I said, I didn't say I am currently running the FSB at 170+mhz, read read!! That new stepping processor topped with a Abit SH6(especially) won't be difficult to reach or surpass 170mhz bus. Pay attention!! And to the newbie who posted last, you're only seem to be going by based on your experience with your old ASUS mobo crap. They are not as good as used to be and just because your MSI OC was not easy as you said. haha.. funny. Read all mobos and do lots of research, not just the mobos you actually have experienced. This means lots and lots of reading and researching other forum site, review sites, etc.

I don't want this to turn into a big battle or anything, we have enough of those going on in the general forum.

I really wanted to know if I would notice a huge difference between a duron 850 and a t-bird 850? for games, SOF and Q3A namely?

The p3 option was thrown in there because it is just that, an option I have been mulling over-really like the layout of the MSI and the intel ASUS cusl2-c, and no I don't really plan on overclocking that much if any. thanks for the suggestions so far

Overall, the t'bird will get you the best performance in most games. The P3 might give you a slight edge in some games, but the t'bird is in the lead for most well rounded performance.

PIII for Q3 or Q3-engine games, probably a TBird for the rest. You'll end up getting vid bottlenecked at high res-32 bit so it may not be a big issue.
