Most women at the gym are wasting their own time.

In my entire life, I've met 4 women, just 4, who regularly went to the gym and got a decent workout for themselves. I admire these women more than I do most men who work out, because they have broken out of our society's norm and taken a road that is awfully lonely for women. "Whatever do you mean, Ned?" you might be asking yourselves. Well, I'll be glad to tell you.

I mean that the vast majority of women who go to the gym are just wasting their time. I get sick and tired of seeing women (and a lot of men, too) come in, do one set of five with 12 pounds on every machine in the place, then leave after a whopping 15 minutes. These are the same chicks who like to say "I work out at the gym every day, but I just can't lose the weight." Let me give you a little advice, sister: one set of dumbell curls with 3 pound weights isn't doing jack for your fat butt, and it isn't going to offset the three twinkies and half gallon of Yoohoo you had for lunch.

They will counter "But Ned, I don't want to bulk up and look all muscley." Believe me, with the dismal excuse of a workout that you just did, you have more hope of spontaneously sprouting horns than you do of gaining rippling muscles. Plus women don't seem to get this one fact: women don't bulk up. Sure, there are female bodybuilders who are ripped, but how often do you actually see these chicks? If it was easy to look like them, all sorts of women would do it.

How many times have you seen a woman in the gym work themselves to the point that their shirt is drenched with perspiration? It just doesn't happen. Now think about all the guys in there - lots of them are simply dripping from every pore. Women's bodies retain more water and have a higher fat content than men's, so where is the sweat? It should be there, but it isn't because they haven't done anything to deserve a good sweat.

Bottom line: women just don't push themselves in the gym. Call it a lack of endurance, a lack of desire, or an intolerance for pain, but very few and far in between are the women who will exhaust themselves on weights or even on cardio.

This might be specific to your gym but most girls in my gym actually spend a lot of time doing cardio. And you can tell too since they all are in good shape. The few ones that don't are also the ones that should spend more time on the threadmill.

Many women are scared they'll get ripped and look like this if they put any more than minimal effort into lifting weights.

I concur.

My wife pushes herself very hard in the gym. She's been complimented by the staff at her gym that they've never seen someone actually use a particular machine the right way. And she really pushes them hard too. The problem is, she has to to get her heart beat up where it needs to be - her body has a lot of endurance and has more muscle tone than most women.

Most of the regular women at my gym work out to a decent sweat. While I agree that the myths about weight training are a sad hinderance to most women, the ones I see do get a good cardio workout while there (most do a mixed weight/cardio workout) and many do a decent weight circuit.

I like when they curl those little pink "toning weights". As if a 2 lb mini-dumbell is going to do anything at all.

Which is sad, because for a women to look like that she needs to suppliment with testosterone.

Nice rant! I have noticed the same phenomenon!

There are however, a nice group of girls in my gym who are extremely fit and actually compete regularly. Those are the exception that you spoke of. I workout at World Gym, which is a lot different than California Fitness or any of those "women" gyms. World has much much more free weights and less circuit training crap.

Oh and the excuse about women not wanting to look bulky, is crap. A woman's body will naturally prevent that from happening in the first place (low testosterone). If they want to look slim and fit, they need to lift weights!

Again, I agree 100% with you!

Nes, excellent post and point. I just got back from the gym. An hour's workout, legit, and I am soaked through to the point I look like I took a shower, (although I don't smell like it...hehe).
With rare exception, the gals at the gym workout with a cell phone in one hand, and a Dooney and Burke purse in the other. What the hell kind of workout is this? And should they actually do anything, they are easily distracted by a friend who wants to talk. Perhaps about the new exercise outfit they are wearing and hoping to be seen in?

Mine too - she's one of the 4

After one session she had to drive my automatic as her leg was too tired to operate the clutch. Now thats a real workout!

We have used a personal trainer and that makes a big difference. They show you that you can push yourself much harder than you thought possible, as well as dispelling any myths about women getting too bulky.

Working out is like any other pursuit. If you don't educate yourself on the subject and then vow to give it your all, you will end up with sub par results.

I know. My wife is a pharmacist (read: 7 years schooling of biology, chemistry and medical "stuff"" and she still thinks that it works that way.

I even point out that I work out twice as frequent as her, lift about 10x the amount of weight and supplement with protien shakes and even *I* don't look like that.

Bah!

Women.

Thanks for that annoying diatribe...

BTW-My wife has run the L.A. Marathon twice and she's run 2 half marathons just this year. She works out 4-5 times a week and is in better shape than most people. Her resting heart rate is around 50 bpm. She must be one of the 4...oh, and her friend who is in equal or better shape must be number 3.

My wife and I aren't slim, but we're trying hard to get there by the end of summer. We go to the gym at least 4 times a week, and we always spend 1+ hours in the weight room. Both of us end up drenched in sweat, and we usually end up not being able to drive stick, walk inclines, or open/close the doors without pain.

We also do some cardio everyday. I'm trying to make it a habit to run 2+ miles as well, 1 mile before weights, 1+ miles after weights.

and even more doing arobics and other cardio classes... those are pretty hard workouts too.

Please note that I didn't say "all" women, just "most". Can we still be friends?
