Most versatile actors?

Possibly not most versatile, but the BEST actor hands down is Anthony Hopkins. His portrayal of Nixon was amazing.

Worst actor is George Bush, patently unbelievable as the current president.

I loved Johnny Depp in the beginning of his career but almost can't stand him now - WAY too mannered and cute.

Al Pacino is an unforgivably overacting HAM. I can't stand Tom Cruise. Mel Gibson makes me want to puke, especially when he tries to portray "cutely vulnerable".

Both Tom Hanks and Ed Norton are at the top of their craft. And don't forget that eminently servicable warhorse, Gene Hackman. Samuel L. Jackson is great.

Two idosyncratic personal faves of mine are Harry Dean Stanton and Harvey Keitel. Keitel isn't even a very good actor technically, but I still love him.

Lastly, no list of this type is (long unusual pause where no person actually speaking would pause) . . . complete w/o the man standing virtually alone at the far left of acting's bell curve, William Shatner.

I think Leonardo De' Caprio is an underrated actor. 2 recent movies that come to mind are Aviator and Catch Me If You Can. Both movies where he changes character dramatically and does very well.

He's incredibly cute too!
I think I now know why you are hiding behind a female avatar.

Yeah, I blame him too.

And the little twerp was ludicrous laughably trying to master a proper period accent in Sleepy Hollow.

Johnny Depp wasn't even the best actor in Pirates of the Caribbean much less most versatile ever, not even close. Geoffrey Rush is a far better actor in every way, including versatility (he played Captain Barbarossa). Here's his bio on imdb: link

Also, my vote for most versatile is Gary Oldman.

Tom Hanks is arguably the best actor of our time, but without question he has to be the most versatile actor in all his different roles.

Who comes at #2 then? The first person that comes to mind would be Johnny Depp. From Edwards Scissorhands, to Pirates of the Carribean, Blow, Finding Neverland, to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he's played very different roles in his career, but he's managed to be oustanding in all of them.

tom hanks was exactly what i was thinking before i clicked

What about Will Ferrell?

Seriously, lol. From Anchorman to Old School to his roles in Wedding Crashers and Starsky & Hutch...

Also, maybe Ben Stiller? His role from Meet the Fockers compared to Anchorman or Dodgeball is a big switch too...

I realize they're comedy actors but they deserve some credit IMO...

I'd say Johnny Depp is the most versatile actor today. I hardly recognize him from one movie to another, up until recently I wasn't even aware that it was one person playing in all those different movies. Big thumbs up, really talanted actor.

PS I'm actually watching Sleepy Hollow right with Johnny Depp right now...

Another vote for Johnny Depp being the most versatile. This in part due to his willingness to play such a wide variety of parts. He's been in some great movies.

Throw Gangs of New York in there too.

I personlly hate Tom Hanks - but he repeatedly is a great actor in a wide variety of roles. I remember reading somewhere that when he had his first test for a major part, the director stopped auditioning because he said Hanks was just someone that everyone could emote for...people cared about him personally. Didn't have the best acting skills, wasn't the best looking...but people just attached to him.

Someone else mentioned John Turturro - who I would probably also have to put on a list of very versatile actors.

And lastly, William Dafoe can play extremes very well - from To Live and Die in LA's murderous counterfiter to Platoon's hero to Flight of the Intruder's ace pilot...you really never know if he will be a good guy, or a bad guy as the film develops. Personally, I always find that makes him interesting to watch...
