So I know this girl who needs a bunch of units by fall in order to transfer. Originally she thought she could just finish the units before fall, meaning she'd take summer classes, but then found out they had to be done by spring..and right now she's taking 18 semester units at one community college, and 12 quarter units at another...which totals about 26 semester units, or 39 quarter units. That's NINE classes. And, she works about 30 hours a week at a pharmacy.

your friend is really stupid.

EDIT: Your friend is still really stupid, but I'll refrain from saying anything else.

EDIT 2: I'm really stupid too.

there was a few terms while i was in engineering where i had to take 6 courses...3 units....which was 37 hours of class a week..

just a lil over 7 hours a day....

DAT WAS INSANE for me...

Whoa. Doesn't the school have a limit on how many you can take? I know mine does... you can of course take more, but you would need the Dean's permission.

same here and in addition every credit you go over 17 you pay $500-800/credit in addition to normal tuition fees

i think 500 instate probably 800 or more out of state

Well, they're separate colleges, so I guess they really don't know.

And plus the classes really aren't that bad. Maybe 26 units at Berkeley where she wants to go by this fall would be an inhumane feat..but not around here.

Props to her if she passes them all. With that many units, even the simplest classes are a b!tch just because of the time issue.

Your friend is insane. One semester in college I had to get permission from the Dean to take something over 20 (don't remember exactly).

Anyhow, I figure it as follows for your friend working as a machine, time measured on a weekly basis:
30 hours at work
42 hours of sleep (6 per night, probably a minimum if she's constantly doing stuff)
14 hours eating, getting dressed, showering and getting places (two hours per day -- eats fast, no doubt)
39 hours in class
---
125 Total

That leaves about 43 hours per week for assignments, roughly one per credit (unit, whatever), so maybe 3-4 hours per class. Your friend is insane. If her classes are a worth a damn, that's a bare minimum to pass, I would say,

I went from a sophomore to graduation in 13 months. From May 21-July of the next year I took 72 hours:

15 in summer school (special permission)
21 in Fall semester + 6 off site at sister campus (I transferred---core requirement that I needed to retake---english 202 & corporate finance)

21 in Spring Semester

9 in Summer School (first session)

But that's only because I spent 3 years going from a sophomore to a sophomore as I couldn't make myself go to class. when I finally realized that I needed to go, and be done with it....I was motivated. And since I was motivated, I hardly ever missed class. I think I actually had to take 77 hours, but I can't remember the last 6.

But, that's not near what you're talking about. I worked back then but only about 12 hours a week, and it was tutoring for the Math department....so I did my HW, and studying on the clock.

I knew several people taking 22 hours in engineering. It's easy when you have your parents to pay the way. I worked 40-60 hours a week and had a rough time with 12 hours...

Its a lot easier when you dont bother going to lectures. I dunno, I think it would be quite easy to do over 2x the normal workload in arts seeing as how the standard is only 12 contact hours per week.

a guy on my floor always takes 20-25. He says he feels like a lazy ass because he doesnt do anything if he takes less.

Did 27 quarter units once (5x 4-unit classes, 1x 5-unit language class, and 1x 2-unit forum). And part-time (15hours) work doing IT support. Was not fun. Had no time for fun.

After finals were over I slept for about 4 days pausing only to eat, poop, and check email. I rented like 11 DVD's, watched endless TV when not asleep. I then went to the gym, showered for the first time after those aforementioned 4 days, felt human again. Finished college never taking more than 13 units again.

The motivations for taking the 27 units wa good, just didn't pan out the way I expected. Life experience though.....

21 units was not terribly unusual in engineering ... I had a few semesters of that, and I know a few that did that while working part time. 18 was typical IIRC.
