Most underpaid baseball player?

Yes I realize when you're making 7 digits for playing a game it's hard to consider yourself to be underpaid..blah blah, ignore this thread if you don't watch baseball.

Two candidates stick out..Barry Zito, the A's Cy Young winner of last year, who's been nothing but spectacular since he stepped onto the scene a few years back, at $1.1m.

And then there's Pujols, who's hitting .373 and a candidate for the triple crown this year..making $900,000.

This is in a league where Shawn Green is getting $15m, and is hitting .263 with 11 homers..Griffey is getting $10m, Bernie Williams $12, Jermaine Dye $12m, A-Rod at $22 mil,etc..

Whats wrong with Bernie making $12 million? I know he got injured this season, but if you look at his stats for like the last 5 or 6 years he's consistently put up like 25+ HRs, 10+ SBs and 100+ RBIs and his career average is over .300. Shawn Green on the other hand... being a Dodger fan I think they are too enamored with his fluke explosion last year. They haven't even moved him out of the #3 spot in the order despite his numbers.

A-rod. He is worth at least half a billion over the next 10 years. Of course I am being sarcastic here.

pujols and zito are getting paid that "little" because they're still in their rookie contracts...once they get a new contract you can be sure it will be much, much higher.

vernon wells of the toronto bluejays- $520,000...better bang for your buck than pujols...85 runs, 28 hr, 94 rbi's, .308 avg...about the same stats as pujols but half the price.

same thing with shawn marion in the nba.

you can check out the baseball salaries here: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/salaries?team=oak

250kper is league minimum afaik.
none are really underpaid.
wells, zito, and pujols are all due big paydays when their current contracts are up.

In baseball terms, there certainly are guys who are underpaid.

Of course everyone who plays professional sports gets a lucrative contract but that is the way the profession is. Compared to their peers, you could make a case for a number of ballplayers who should be paid more. Ichiro makes under 5 million. He is probably one of the top 5-7 outfielders in baseball, yet compared to most of those guys, he makes about half what they do.

All you people saying that professional athletes are overpaid are wrong. You may not like it, but if you look at the supply an demand of their talent, they are in such a small percentage of the population. This allows for thier talent to be in short supply and high demand in terms of people wanting to watch them play. Its all about the economics of it. Really if you don't like it, don't watch the games or buy the apparel and dont go to the games. All of this contributes to their salaries.

That being said, Pujols and Wells are definately underpaid and will be seeking big contracts when their current ones run out.

These guys may not be 'underpaid' by standards in other industries, but I believe Syringer clearly means "are they underpaid relative to their peers in the same job market".

We can get into an endless argument over salaries for players, but the bottom line is that our society has (mis)placed its values such that the demand for the talents of people who can play certain sports justifies enormous salaries.

Given the current salary structure in MLB, I'd say Pujols and Zito are waaaaaay underpaid, and if I was their agents, I'd be calling the team and saying "now, about that new contract we're negotiating this week". They are going to cash in big-time, especially Pujols. Zito I think is going to have to leave Oakland to get the big bucks, but Pujols is going to stay in St. Louis. Part of the reason he's putting up amazing numbers is because of the guys hitting around him in the lineup there, guys like Edmonds, Renteria, Martinez, Drew, Rolen etc etc.

Esteban Loaiza
Vernon Wells
Hank Blaylock
Lance Berkman
Eric Gagne
Paul LoDuca
Garret Anderson
Ichiro
Mark Mulder
Tim Hudson
Barry Zito
Albert Pujols
Eric Chavez

My vote's for Pujols because he has put up the same big numbers for the past 2 years and is still making that much (or little, depending how you look at it.) I admire him for fulfilling his contract and not whining about his pay or demanding a renegotiation.

Economics my azz. If its so freaking much economics, why do CITY and STATE governments have to pay for their stupid $300 million stadiums. Last I checked, most teams were losing money.

I never understood this. Why should i pay for the darn stadium just to have have the team move in a few years. Not to mention i dont go to many games.

I dont think any Pro-athlete is underpaid. hell they are way overpaid and not to mention most act like thay are gods. Basketball is full of punks. It seems like every time i watch sportscenter you hear about some stupid basketball player doing something stupid. From hitting people, trashing cameras, rape to shooting people. There was only two people i thought were "good" and that was shaq and kobe. well we all know kobe did (not just hte rape but the screwing around on his wife).

At least football had 2 brothers that quit to join the army and be rangers. Some of the few pro-players i actually have respect for.

From a Braves fans' perspective I gotta throw in Marcus Giles at $316,500. Granted, it's still his rookie contract, but he's going to be seeing a HUGE jump in his next contract if he can keep this up. Besides the fact that he's been batting better than just about anyone lately (has a chance to tie the NL record for most consecutive hits) he's been a major factor in the team's success this year. Between him and Furcal constantly getting on base it's making it a LOT easier for Sheffield and Chipper to drive in runs.

I agree to an extent. No one is worth $5 mil for their athletic ability. They're just playing a stupid game, for God's sake. But aren't they worth that much for their entertainment value? As long as whatever they're doing brings in hundreds of millions of dollars, they deserve a percentage of that. Blame society for spending so much money on the sport.

they pay for the stadium because it will bring in revenue for the city.

my throw in would be the entire KC Royals team.
