In my opinion it's the Powerbook G4 from Apple...but cost prohibits me from buying one. The iBook is too wimpy...so what are the best notebooks on the PC platform?

yes the apple titanium G4 notebook is awersome. For PCs, I think the most stylish may be the Sony 505 series or the Fujitsu small Lifebooks. Even their regular notebooks are nice looking.

I happen to like the Toshiba satellite laptops! (from what i have seen)

I have no idea really much about laptops, but the Satellites are very nice.. as are the Sony Vaio's - (those babies gotta be expensive)

I've got both the iBook and the Powerbook. I like them both for what they are.

I rarely take the Powerbook outside, because a) it's brand new and I don't want to scratch it b) I could swear it's heavier than my VAIO and c) Strangely, the iBook feels more durable, 'throwable', if you will. I don't think the iBook looks wimpy IMHO - having said that I hardly stress mine with music, MS Office and so forth - and it gets admiring looks. But admittedly the blue apple logo gently glowing out of the silver Ti Powerbook cover knocks'em dead every time.

I think the high-end Sony VAIO's - I've had the R600 / Z600 as well as 'ultraportables' as well as my trusty workhorse, a F400 series (weighs quite a bit and is not that pretty but does go 4+ real-life hours with 2 batteries inside) - generally look good - but they are nowhere near as well thought out as even the iBook. The little touches on the Z600 for example, like the CD-ROM drive in which the PCMCIA card tucks neatly underneath the drive unit itself, is a nice thought - but given such an implementation, I'm sure that Apple would do a better job.

Even the simple things like the power supply, Apple have put a hell of a lot of thought into - whereas Sony hit you with a black brick, or a silver slightly rounded brick.

Many notebooks are svelte and nicely coloured - but not what I would call stylish or particularly well thought out as such. I've used a lot of notebooks in my time, and the Apples aren't just about looks alone - it's the depth of the thinking that goes into the design which impress me. The key is to look good and do things better - and the iBook/Powerbook does this admirably.

i personally dont think the g4 powerbook is really that well designed. Sure the LCD is widescreen, but it makes the notebook unnecessarily wide. The ibook i think is a far superior notebook in terms of space design and looks just as good, though not as fast. besides you can get a cdrw on the ibook. and its half the price.
