most stable Duron motherboard?

I want to put together a low-power, low-heat, low-noise 24/7 system using a Duron processor. What board do you guys recommend? It just needs to be really stable so it can run all day and all night.

I want to use at least a 1ghz Duron; I don't know if I need a 1.8ghz Duron. Would it be a good option to get an XP and underclock it? It's going to be in my room and I want it to be super-quiet, which means quiet HSF (plus case fans and psu), which means low-heat cpu.

Also, has anyone used a super-quiet PSU and/or case fans?

Why a duron?

If you want quiet, undervolt a Tualatin celeron. Runs fanless, easy. And easily hits fanless.

If you want an article about the Athlon's and undervolting thought, toms has one.

Good luck getting a fanless duron, i've heard they're beasts to cool.

well, durons are cheap, that's why 🙂 it's just going to be a file server mostly.

how cheap are durons? they've been replaced by semprons, but old processors generally aren't worth it if you want to underclock and still be decently fast. course theres always the dependable mobile bartons..more costly though.. low end low speed processors aren't very hot these days anyhow. u gonna get a sonata or something? the other parts are probably more important unless your getting some kinda tiny case where your processor has little or no airflow.

haha Sonata, I wish. I'm planning on getting a black Raidmax 268. I really like the case. There will be four 80mm fans on the front and 2 80mm fans on the side. The back only has room for a 60mm or something, so I'm planning on just sticking with the 4 80mm fans in the front to push air out (lots of holes drilled in the back already).

I don't really care what processor it is, just as long as it's at least 1ghz and doesn't need a big, noisy HSF on it. It will mainly be used for file serving using Windows 2000, and a bit of Internet surfing or Microsoft Word once in awhile.

I'm not very famliar with Intel processors - is the Tualation a model of Celeron? I'm poking around on Pricewatch and can't see it. Fanless sounds really nice 🙂 I just don't want to spend over $50 for the CPU.

hm 4 fans? good god, that qualifies as loud no matter how slow they are going.. atleast moderately noisy😛 any half decent hs with low rpm fan can cool even a medium high end cpu, no underclocking necessary. you underclock when you build a pc in a tiny enclosed case that has no or maybe one low rpm fan max. with 4 fans u have enough air that it doesn't matter. don't bother with an old processor/board, its either been used or way over priced for the performance u'll be getting per dollar. unless its a bleeding edge cpu, it can be cooled by a nice very quiet copper cooler from thermalright or zalman. ~30dollars

as for super silent psu, seasonic supersilencers are good. go to silentpcreview.com recommendations section or review section. its tops. that or passive which are more expensive, and well ur using that cheap case so i guess not. your case fans defeat the purpose anyways.

i have some silent heatsink/fans i use all the time on athlonxp 2200+ and lower cpu's (they use 80mm, low rpm fans)... if you need one i can let you have one of these dirt cheap.

and for your budget of less then $50 you can easily get an athlonXP which will be a whole lot better then a duron
