Its not just 19" LCD's. So now its dumb of people to buy X800 Crossfire, but not 6800 SLI? Please. 6800 SLI has the same problem that Crossfire does in that a single GTX is about as fast, for much cheaper, less hassle, more features (your fav), etc.

Which is why I said the 7800GTXs have to be considered?

There are three choices that offer similar performance at 16X12. All have pros and cons.

Were I to rank them in order of preference for gaming at 16X12 I would pick:

1. 7800GTX best features of the lot, similar performance most of the time
2. 6800GT/U SLI close second on features, sometimes much better performance
3. Crossfire distant third on features (lacks SM3, SS shadows, EXR HDR, TAA), can't be used with CRTs, clunky dongle + master slave arrangement Marginally better on some games.

Who on the planet would disagree with me? (outside of Intelia/ Turtle) I'm not posting any revelations here Ackmed, musing on the DOA paper launch.

they ain't exactly flying off the shelves . . . nor would they IF there were thousands on the shelves . . .

it aint a PL . . . it's "limited supply" for "limited demand" . . .
try "non-existant demand" as x1800 [paper] launch is 5 days away.

Exactly! Do they want Crossfire or not?

(A certain someone, won't say his name ;) ) seems to insult so many people that they just give up and start taking his side on everything, rationality be damned!

Cainam, you agreed with Rollo that the sky was burning brightly - you gladly hopped onboard his strained metaphor, where he also proclaimed it a failure of epic proportions.

So I think an analogy to another epic failure is in order, since Crossfire is clearly a tradgedy to put among the greats.

Rollo, I like your sense of humour, and the fact that you know a lot about computer hardware. What I can't understand is the amount of loyalty you show to a company that gives two shiites about you. This goes for the ATI fanbois as well, neither of these companies really cares about the devotion you show to them that you would waste so much time bickering over there products. They only care about money, no if's and's or but's about it. While this might lead to great innovations in 3D hardware, it is still important to remember that the only reason it exists is to extract the most dollar from your wallet.

i have read that they ARE available at some retailers IF anyone in their right mind would want to buy one . . . no MOST of the partners will never see ANY x800 crossfire units as there won't be any more production.

i really don't think ati plans to sell more than a few . . . they are looking to x-fire x1800 . . . [keep your promises] cut your losses and move on . . .

You can be pretty harsh to M0RPH, among others. I enjoy your zealous banter at times too, but it gets old.

Maybe insulting wasn't the right word, a much more appropriate term would be baiting, which you are the master at doing.

(Erm, upon reflection, I'm not saying you're a 'master' 'baiter' either. I mean you're a master at baiting people into getting into flame wars ;) ).

again you avoid the point and take the subject in a completely different (irrelevant) direction.

we have seen the crossfire launch date come and go. we have seen some reviews. what we haven't seen is product in the channel. ati didn't deliver as they said they would, plain and simple. i don't understand why people try to rationalize and defend ati on this.

does this mean ati is going under? nope.

does this mean r520 doesn't exist? or that it suxors? nope.

it just means ati didn't deliver on their promise regarding crossfire in this generation.

if this is somehow inaccurate, then please correct me, but at least try and stick to the subject if you can.

as far as personal opinions, i believe this is a great example of how a company's PR dept. exaggerates in an effort to make a company look better -- there's been pages of cr@p regardging crossfire keeping ati in the news, but yet -- no crossfire.. worse yet, there is no talk of it's absence. just goes to show how gullible the masses can be when manipulated by PR. they dangle the proverbial carrot and the lemmings just keep following.....

Thanks Dude!

I don't do it for nVidia, I'm just in their corner because I'm all about rewarding the company I see driving the industry forward. Just a hobbyist discussing brand features like you'd find in a car or gun forum.....

"The Chevy 327 ownz the Ford 308!" type stuff.

All in good fun, and I try to keep my stuff as accurate as I can to hopefully help out someone who doesn't have my experiences to draw on, or isn't getting what I see as all sides of an issue.

Yes, but the pot can be pretty harsh to the kettle as well here. You don't exactly coat each post towards him with sugar and flowers either.. And frankly I think you get into arguments with him because you don't agree with him or his opinion.

We'd all not like to get into arguments, but we all have different opinions. And frankly getting into spats with someone (like m0rph) and then playing the "I'm the victim" card is immature. You guys are in different trenches, just accept the fact that he's entitled to like a company just like you are.

Has a timeline, 1996 was the year of the 3D card.

BTW the Verite 1000 was not a flop, it was one of the highest rated and well recieved 2D/3D cards of the time, many preferred it to the Voodoo 1 because of IQ.

Back then I owned them all except the Rage 3D. I had the V1000, Voodoo1, Mystique, Virge 3D (not all at the same time).

The first flop was the Nvidia NV1, which didn't support Direct 3D, I remeber watching one in the computer store for a year, that one card never sold. It was there years later at a discount.

I contend differently, Renditon was a flop because it was the chip that the D3D standard was created from by MS.. and yet turned out to be a flop.. (yes it was a flop lol, it was soundly defeated).
They had a chance to be "The 3dfx" of the industry, but failed miserably in the face of the true king.
Voodoo rewrote the rulebook.. WITHOUT MS's blessing.

No one did as much for 3d graphics than 3dfx, with a close 2nd being Nvidia. And thats debatable.. I only give 3dfx the title because their feature set became "the necessity" for all future contenders that truley wanted to compete.
But NV has done their fair share in developing that market, more than anyone else.

3dfx didnt innovate enough after the Voodoo1.. granted SLI was very cool in the V2.. and V3 I enjoyed because it was a pretty fast card.. by the V4/V5 I became disillusioned and believe I went with a Nvidia. But I did wait a long time for the Voodoo4..

3dfx and GLide miniports for Quake is what pioneered the 3d industry, even though OpenGL/Glide never succeeded due to M$'s backing of their D3D and nVidia's tremendous success with D3D accelerators.

I don't recall Voodoo1 being much of a D3D accelerator...

From businessweek:
In November 1995, the company introduced its ViRGE family of 3D graphics and video acceleration products, which enables 3D graphics on mainstream PCs

Which made it close to if not THE best 2D available when it came out. Keep in mind we're not talking about the more common and inferior MX or GX version -- crapified versions of video cards for sub-$300 PC market come out later.

It was available in stores a month or 2 BEFORE the official release as an OEM version with a reseller's license....

Hmmm... interesting... This is news to me...

I credit 3DFX for being the legitimate pioneers of the 3D gaming industry, but they were largely a two trick pony. ATI was around the whole time as 2d video accelerators, but they were VERY late to the party for 3D. The company that continued to innovate and produce in the face of two generations of tough competition (3DFX and ATI) is nVidia.

I don't see how the 5800 or ATI xFire can be the "Most spectacular failure in video card history". After all, ATI and NVidia are still around. 3DFX is not.

It worked great in D3D. It did everything. I used a voodoo1 for a long time, I remember specifically playing Monster Truck Madness (a MS game) with it.
