Most Simple Network Ever, but can't do it

I need to connect my girlfriend's brand new laptop to my PC. Both are running Win XP Home SP2.

Her laptop is network capable already.

My PC had no network card, so bought a brand new ethernet 10/100Mbps fast ethernet card and new RJ45 Category 5 patch cable.

Installed the card no worries, XP picked it up and installed drivers etc.

Connected the two together with the cable.

Little icon in systray saying "A network cable is unplugged".

Ummm ... I've checked and double-checked that the cable is seated properly at both ends.

Network Connections is showing Local Area Connection 2 with status same as above; cable unplugged.

Wossup? Dodgy cable?

Or do I need to configure either laptop, PC, or both for them to be able to see each other. I was told that this kind of network setup was easy as pie, connect the two together and hey presto, XP will do everything. It appears not.

So you use a crossover cable and plug both ends into the respective ethernet cards, and presto? Is it really that easy?

I am looking to transfer files, not concerned with internet sharing at this point, this is just a temp setup since I had to run data recovery on FAT32 drive in XP NTFS, so I need to port over the data onto a FAT32 drive again, so all will be well.
