Hmmm... my vote goes with science/medicine

where would we be without vacines ?

where would we be without antibotics ?

where would we be without the basic knowledge that led to surgeons washing their hands ?

These 3 little things have saved how many I wonder ?

well I would count the bible as a book.

Wow! Are you really that...well, nevermind. Anyway, Geoarge Washington existed. Not only do we have his body, his house, his writings, but COUNTLESS references to him in independent works. Not so for Jesus. NOTHING was written about him at the time he was supposed to be alive - NOTHING (and this was during the Roman era - the Romans kept EXCELLENT records BTW). We have no body, no home, NOT ONE THING WRITTEN by him. NOTHING. The only eveidence is a book wriiten somewhere between fifty and a hundred years AFTYER his supposed death.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the Romans do have record of Jesus...If I can find the book, I'll quote it for ya...
EDIT: Sweet...I found the website, my copy of "Antiquities" is still in my locker...Josephus references Jesus in Antiquities 18:63-64 "Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man IF IT BE LAWFUL TO CALL HIM A MAN, for he was a doer of wonders, A TEACHER OF SUCH MEN AS RECEIVE THE TRUTH WITH PLEASURE. He drew many after him BOTH OF THE JEWS AND THE GENTILES. HE WAS THE CHRIST. When Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men among us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him, FOR HE APPEARED TO THEM ALIVE AGAIN THE THIRD DAY, AS THE DIVINE PROPHETS HAD FORETOLD THESE AND THEN THOUSAND OTHER WONDERFUL THINGS ABOUT HIM, and the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day"
Tactius also mentions Jesus a lot in his writings...

Sorry, but that was written almost 100 years AFTER Jesus's supposed death, by a man that wasn't alive at the time of Jesus's supposed life. There is no mention of Jesus by anyone that was alive at the time he was supposed to be alive. There is no record by the Romans of his Crucifiction (the kept very good records). Odd........

We would probably be in the same boat that we were in for the 150,000 years we went without them. We have lived far longer as a speices without those items than with.

The most significant event in the whole of history would probably be the printing press. It's allowed the widespread "virus" of knowledge that allowed for the rapid evolution of society. It started the upward trend of learning and knowledge. Now we just have to fight the spawn of the downward trend... AOL. :p

I've adressed this point above. Tacitus lumps Christ in the same sentence as Tiberius and Pontius Pilatus, while mentioning a specific region. He clearly feels that he was a historical fact, and gives absolutely no indication to show that he believes he was a non-existent being. The Romans kept decent records, but if you know anything about antiquity at all, you should obviously realize that the vast majority of written information has been lost. Hell, if we were to dismiss historical figures on the basis that nobody wrote about them at the exact time they were alive, our number of key figures would be reduced significantly. Given the state of most evidence in antiquity, the evidence for Christ having existed really isn't all that bad. It's actually quite strong given that he lived in some podunk province towards the edge of the empire.

So, in summary, can we stop with this claim that Christ didn't exist? I've given a fair amount of proof that he did. Mind you, I'm only proving his existence as a human being. All of the other deeds of Christ can be debated ad nauseum, but they seem to lack any sort of strong evidence (outside of religious texts of course).

Actually, pretty much EVERY major historical figure was written about by historians/record keepers that were alive at the time they were alive. Also, there are artifacts from pretty much EVERY major historical figure that I can think of save one......

There is absolutely no way to prove someone/something never existed. There is however no proof of his exsistence either......

I am done now.... :D

One thing that you're forgetting is that Christ was hardly a major figure in his day and age. It was only in the years following him that the story truly got out and any significance was placed on his life outside of a small circle of folks who had heard of him/lived with him. This is perfectly evidenced in Tacitus, who addresses the background of the Christians with only a passing mention of Christ. Clearly, he didn't think he was huge. But just as clear is that Tacitus believed Christ existed. So having hard evidence from Christ's actual life is unlikely, given the circumstances of that rather modest life in a province, but to be mentioned by a major writer within 100 years of his death is the key thing that presents rather solid evidence.

...Except it wasn't the "Bubonic Plague". That old belief is by now completely discredited. It was an unknown virus - now extinct -, that spread from man to man. Rats or fleas weren't involved at all.

But the great death or black death is considered by many to be the real trigger of the Western Civilization. The great loss of people thinned out societies and made people's fates and fortunes highly mobile. Something that has never happened anywhere else ever.

The experience also taught people to rely on themselves. And to rely on knowledge, discoveries and thinking skills learned by themselves. Such as quarantine, for instance, instead of the vile, evil, lying, brainless dogma of religion and priests. This moment was the birth of exploring thought. The renaissance and age of enlightening followed.

The other truly significant event in history, would be the foundation of secret society, almost 4000 years ago. But that's a secret of course. ;)

How can anyone in their right mind say the Birth of Jesus was the msot important? If you believe in Christianity, then the most important event would be, by far, the creation, or fall, of Man, without which Jesus would never have been necessary.

The question asks for the most significant even in all of HISTORY. History only began once written records started to be created. Therefore, the fall of man (if there was such a thing) would not necessarily be historical, but rather as some sort of event from prehistory.

Actually (man, a lot of those around...), Biblical scholars say John, the last gospel to be written, was written down in 90 AD...Scholars say this is 40 years after Christ, which would put Christ at ~50 AD...Right in Josephus' time...
