If all your dad does is word processing and e-mail (like 70% of America) then see if you can upgrade to AthlonXP 2000+. That way, he's set for another 20 years or so.

I'd go for either a Duron 1Ghz or an XP 1700+. I just built a rig for a friend using a Duron 1Ghz on an nForce MoBo. It is definitely a speedy budget processor, and a steal at only ~$54(when we built it at least).

Well an xp is to expensive... i'm doing this for his birthday and I ain't going to spend a lot of money on him.. :) not that he ain't worth it..... just that I don't want to..... and I guess it would help if I said his Motherboard is an ABIT KT7....

go with the new morgan core durons.like 1ghz + or go with some of the athlons 266fsb that can be had at approx the same price. get whatever is cheaper because real time performance between the two would be very similar.the duron has teh diff newer enhancements with the core, but the athlon has the cache and the higher fsb........but either one you chooise should be able to last him for some time.

What is the biggest CPU your dads board will take? If he goes from a 600 Mhz Duron to a 1.0 Ghz there will be a good difference in speed.

I believe the max it will take is right around a 1.2ghz... I got him the Duron 1ghz... for around 50 bucks... Then I can upgrade it for him one more time for cheap and go the athlon instead of duron and make him really happpy.

Any morgan core Duron (1G or above) is good. Very speedy for little $$$.

Prices are great on Tbirds (get 1.33 or 1.4, always stepping AYHJA) and lower-end XP's. With that kind of speed, you might have to upgrade an older HDD (if necessary) to really notice though.

Never, ever buy a 1.1G Tbird, especially if it is 200MHz FSB. With those chips, there is a high likelihood that it was fabbed in Austin with an aluminum core. That was the end of the line for that old fab, and the chips do not OC and tend to run hot.
All newer Durons and Athlons are fabbed in Dresden with copper cores.

well... many of you guys are talking about how good the duron with morgan core is...
well... i've never tested out a morgan durons...
but all the durons that i've used so far... has been a great o/cer.

750 went to 7.5x133 without missing a beat.
i was able to take 750 beyond 1100. but i didn't feel comfortable doing it. :)
so i used that one around 1000.

i had 800 that did about the same as my 750.

recently i bought a 950 (200fsb)
and i was able to break 1200 easy.
i'm using it for my htpc @ 9.5*133=1264. :) and all this at a default core voltage.
i'm sure if i unlock my 950 and raise the core voltage... to 1.85v..
i'll go much further.

without unlocking... i was able to hit 9.5*139=1321.
but didn't feel too stable there.
my friend has my artic siver II right now... so i'm going to hold off unlocking until i get it back.
who know how far i can go with this chip.

so anyhow... to make a long story short...
i think the durons are not something to over look.

especially at $51 shipped from newegg... can't go wrong.

I know what you mean overclocking the durons... Before I gave my dad the duron 600 system, I played with it a lot and was able to get the 600 up to 1ghz using the ol' pencil trick. But since he was the one using it and I didn't want to hear him complain about it not working I just set it at 600 for him.. But I can't wait to play with this 1ghz duron I just bought him.... I'm a hopin..... that I will see some 1.1 or 1.2 with it.. I'd be happy....
