most reliable speed test?

So, I'm getting settled in at my new apartment and I'm trying to figure out how I want to network my desktop, which I do my online gaming on.

Ant suggestions on the best way to do some real tests to measure the real-world difference between wired vs wireless g vs wireless n?

(Not that I have an n router, but I figured I could buy one and then return it if the speed boost was negligible)

strange... I actually got better results from the wireless connection than wired :hmm:

wireless:

down -- 17920 Kbps or 17.9 Mbps (2188 kB/s)
up -- 3811 Kbps or 3.8 Mbps (465 kB/s)

wired:

down -- 12497 Kbps or 12.5 Mbps (1526 kB/s)
up -- 3869 Kbps or 3.9 Mbps (472 kB/s)

this was on my laptop, located about 2' from my router, though. obv I'm going to have to try again from my desktop 2 rooms away (whenever I get around to getting my desktop setup >< the room that will someday by my home office in this apartment is right now filled with all the furniture from the kitchen, which is in the midst of being redone... new floors, counters, stove, fridge, etc)
