The only thing I'm looking at now are 85-95 Toyota pickups, because that is the only one I know with a good reputation. What else?

Would rather have a truck but obviously with my price range and requirements there aren't many choices.

edit: I should say I have limited time to buy, and the selection of Toyotas around town isn't the best so I need other options

Update: bought a Mazda B4000. thanks all

85-95 toyota trucks? You mean the ones where they rust through and the frame flexs up.

Most reliable truck will be one that has been taken care of the most. A used car/truck after 3years or so its reliabilty will depend as much if not more on the last owner then the name.

I like GMC/Chevy trucks but they hold their value well. But if one turns up near you get it. If not and you want a small truck then at that price point the Ford Range/Mazda B trucks are good as well. I got a Mazda B4000 myself as I wanted a full size GMC/Chevy but the prices were to high for one that was taken care of. So I got my truck.

Here's to hoping I can say that someday! I spent $3k so the odds seem good this will be a great deal as far as miles per dollar.

If it does what you need it's fine. For some reason there's a quite a few people on this board that act like anything that's not sport oriented is a waste. There's plenty of people that just want/need transportation or to do specific things with their vehicle. It's more important to get the vehicle that will do what you need at a price you can afford than get what the car snobs say you must have.

I just like driving a manual because I feel like I'm controlling an engine rather than just sitting in a moving vehicle. But you're right, and it is a mindset I got away from in the past couple months and ended up saving me at least $7k today. I think it is easy to get in that mindset when you're driving the tin can that is a 1986 Toyota pickup like I had been :p Now I have all of the basic features of a modern vehicle--reclining seats, power everything, doors more than 1/2 inch thick, and an engine that can make it up a hill.

I prefer a stick shift too but it's not practical for my commute. The stop and go would drive me nuts.
