Pay more for the Plextor if you want, but the Lite-On will give you the same or better performance for a hell of a lot less. I have had 0 problems with my 24x Liteon writer in the 1 yr+ that I've had it.

LiteOn is a great choice
I went from HP 4x to TDK 16x to LiteOn 40x and feel I went up in satisfaction of the drives, not just speed
The LiteOn does everything as well or better than a TDK or Plexi and is less $$
I have no problems creating bad media ever (unless the source is bad in which case it'll happen on any drive)
Should come bundled w/ Nero media player, cover designer and burning software which allows burning of files, mp3's, wav's, ISO's, etc.
There really is no need to spend more for a Plexi unless your set on having that name on the drive

Edited to add the range of successful media:
Everything!
Imation, TDK, CircuitCity, ValueDisc, Sony, Verbatim, Fuji, PNY, you get the idea - there all made by a few manufacturers anyway and they all work w/ the LiteOn
Be sure that your firmware is up do date as this increases media compatibility esp. as new stuff is released

Lite-on. Period. Any of the rebadged lite-ons also. They have many names.

Some of the rebadged Lite-ons use different firmware. I don't know how much that affects performance, but there was a thread a little while back on the GH forum about firmware issues and the Cenodyne (I believe).

Personally I think that all the IDE drives are much the same when it comes down to it... and judging by most people reaction to this thread that is the case.

I recommend a SCSI burner, for all round reliability. I have had the same Sony SCSI burner for 2 and a half to 3 years now. I have moved it along as I have updated my PC's and it has NEVER made a coaster. I have found that the SCSI interface is far more reliable than IDE. It is also one less IDE device you will have to mess with.
