Most reliable cable modem?

I need a cable modem for a co-worker of mine.

He uses an RCA modem which is somewhat stable, but it is slow and gives inconsistent speed.

He had a Surfboard 5120 that I connected and it worked for a short time and was much faster and more consistent, until it got stuck with a flashing receive light, as if the cable was unplugged.
He could not find the stock adapter, so I used a universal adapter which worked but got very hot.
Personally I have had very good experience with Motorola modems including the 5120, so is this just a bad modem or could the universal adapter not be providing the right power when it gets hot?

Anyway, if not the 5120, then he needs a new modem. It is crucial for it to be always on and handle many fast connections and signals.

Linksys is no good as all of the ones I tried crashed very quickly with any kind of high internet activity.
RCA is also not what I want. What else is there that is worth trying? Dlink? Or should I just try another 5120?

Thanks

Most of the universal adapters have low max current outputs. Could have been a flakey surfboard too.

I'd go with another one.

We have a Surfboard 5120 in our server room that hasn't been power cycled/touched otherwise in over 18 months. It has a 5 megabit service that runs some site to site vendor vpn's and remote user vpn's.

It seems like cable modems are hit and miss. 🙂 I was thinking about dropping my old, slow Toshiba PCX1100U for a Motorola Surfboard but decided against it because they both have bad reviews.

For now I have settled with a Dlink DCM-202 and I'm happy.

99% of the troubles that people think are caused by Broadband modem are imaginary.

These (actually) Bridges, are simple devices, and any Brand name would be OK, unless the ISP does Not like it. I.e. you check the ISP Support site and the Modem is on the ?Red? list.

I'd definately agree with Jack on this. I've dealt with several different brands of cable modems, motorola, toshiba, RCA, etc. and have yet to see a "bad" cable modem unless it was hit by lightning or something. In 99% of my cases it was due to a bad or cheap router that was locking up. Cable modems are very simple devices, all they do is bridge an ethernet/usb connection with the cable network, that's it.

I didn't say they were bad either. In my case apparently there is an issue with Toshiba modems being too sensitive to frequency fluctuations. 😕

iv been using a surfboard 4100 for about 6 years now and never had a problem.

went from cox cable to roadrunner with no problem, still get 8M all day long with it
