I need the most reliable 250gb SSD. The reason 256gb doesn't work for me is that I make a few exact replica clones with clonezilla to mechanical drive and if anything ever happens I just reclone it to a new drive. Otherwise I'm very happy with my m4.

They don't sell 256gb mechanical drives that I can clone to so I need a reliable 250gb ssd. If I clone my m4 I need to clone it to a 320gb mechanical drive and it's a pain to reclone a 320gb to a 256gb drive because I have to resize partitions etc and cloning a bigger to smaller drive isn't that efficient.

Clonezilla will, if not told any differently, make an exact copy, when performing a disk to disk copy. This simply leaves unused space on the destination drive. I use it for tentative backups and data recovery attempts pretty regularly, and the destination disk gets the same partition table as the source disk.

IoW, there's no problem at all using a 320GB HDD, except for the speed of the cloning process. If it increased the sizes of any partitions, you should pay attention to what options you are selecting. Clonezilla can do that, but that is optional.

As to the most reliable 250GB SSD...by the time we know, it will be EOL and hard to find.

Ditto. You don't need the exact same size drive. To that point, not every drive sold as '250gb' will be the exact same actual size. This is true all throughout drives. Look at the full formatted space of a 1TB Seagate Barracuda vs. a 1TB WD Blue for example.

As to the question, I think the MLC drives such as Vertex 4 and 840 Pro should be your bet for longevity. SLC (and TLC) are less robust.

If you truly want an ultra-reliable drive, then you go for something enterprise-level such as the Intel DC S3700 series. They are expensive, but are designed for much much much MUCH more severe use than a desktop drive will typically ever experience.

Actually SLC is the more robust one. SLC > MLC > TLC. SLC can be made lower power, faster, and more durable, than MLC. It's also far more expensive, though, and few users need the benefits v. MLC.

clonezilla is great, however is there really not a freeware solution to clone to other drives of varying sizes still?

larger NM SSD tends to last longer. old school MLC is what folks refer to as eMLC nowadays lol.

Avoid the samsung 840/840-pro it is not compatible with LSI megaraid should you encounter one in your path for fast ;)

Corsair neutron GTX? looks good. sketch company otherwise.

OCZ Vecotr? Look great!. really sketch company.

Oddly the Intel 520 although sandforce, seems to be "Supported" by LSI (90% of all servers) and adaptec (the other 10%). lol. Never tried one myself.

I can guarantee you the samsung 840 pro does not perform to the level of the 830's as far as reliability. Probably just a firmware bug or not aggressive enough GC but it will reset randomly under random circumstance (not heavily loaded). The same RIG with the old 830's are 1000% solid.

Make your choice, sprinkle some Overprovision for extra luck (no joking) and go to town.
