I was having a conversation with a friend, and he is one of those people that will say anything and make it sound true. He claimed that the most recognized brand names are:

1) Nike
2) Coke-Cola
3) CAT (Caterpillar)

I am not sure if I believe that. Google didn't come up with some quick enough, do you guy know anything about this?
I really think he is wrong, but I can't prove him wrong.

I hate when people pull facts out of their asses, and no way for me to prove them wrong right the way. Maybe that is a good reason to get a Blackberry and cut the crap.

The other problem is that my roommate assumes he is correct, and tells other people the wrong facts. I told her yesterday to double check facts like this before adding to your pool of knowledge... anyways.

Thanks

Edit: I guess I just need to prove that one of those three is not top 3, then he is wrong.

Coke. I remember reading it in the Guiness Book of World Records. That was maybe five years ago but I doubt it has changed.

Nike? I've been to remote villages in India where people didn't believe in shoes but they sure believed in Nokia cellphones. ;)

i think Nestle should also be considered. Many people in the US might not know about it, around the world they are the definitive chocolate maker.

Coke has to be number 1. I was once in the bush country in Kenya, many miles from a phone or a paved road, but even in the tiniest village store you could get a bottle of Coke.

I doubt Nike even makes the top 10. And Caterpiller would be way down the list. Others likely near the top would be Microsoft, IBM, Google, McDonalds, Toyota, GE, Sony, Disney and Marlboro.

From what I've been able to see as far as international recognition,

Coca-Cola, McDonalds, and Microsoft are the top 3 in an October 17, 2007 worldwide survey.

Also, the Nike Swoosh, Google, Virgin Group, Nestle, Disney (and esp. Mickey Mouse), maybe UPS, and China Mobile should also be toward the top somewhere.......remember, this is a WORLDWIDE recognition, not just the U.S., so what's most recognizable in the world may be quite different than what we expect to see.
