I was spoiled, as I played 'Grand Prix Legends' back in the day.

Anything even close to that today? I'm not talking eye-candy, but realistic in terms of the driving experience.

Thanks.

rFactor 1 & 2, GTR2, Race 07, Assetto Corsa and Project CARS although their patches has been messing things up. rFactor 2 is very unfinished but has very good close to real life physics on many of their cars.

GTR2 was my introduction to a proper race sim - I remember shifting mid-turn and feeling the back end of the car get loose (force feedback wheel). I was impressed. :p

Played Forza, currently play Dirt Rally and Project Cars, which looks like a decent driving game save for the fact it's virtually unplayable with an Xbox controller.

Gt legends its still active. Its old,buy if you don't mind you can get it cheap, I play it with altbierbude: http://www.altbierbude.de/index.php?lang=en

Stock car extreme is the most finished car simulator.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/273840/

gt legends cause its awesome to drive old cars:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/44690/

Both games are good games, but if ull go with gt legends sign up for altbierbude community. You get 638 tracks and 2523 cars.

I am going to check these two games out, good suggestions!

Dirt Rally
GRiD Autosport (if you turn everything off)
Project Cars
Assetto Corsa

These all can give you a good challenge IMO, forI too, cuz Im an old gamer and still have the game you mentioned, and Nascar 2003, which I still play to this day, know where you are coming from, and love me some challenging racing games. But those are higest on my list, and when I just want to mess around I play F1 2013 and GRiD 2 :D

I was going to play GPL again, but it is a PITA to re-install all the mods/add-ons, and in a certain order, and then there are glitches, lock-ups, etc....

The only thing that may prevent me from playing a racing sim again is the set-up/take-down of the wheel/pedals every time you play.... I don't use a console controller.

GT Legends sounds good. How about Dirt Rally... realistic?

Most SIM game in the DIRT lineup by far. I love it. It will certainly make you pay for your mistakes. ;)

Are all the race-types within the game strictly against the clock, or are there regular races as well? And it's still around @ $60. ?

Oh, and damn, you have your CPU at 4.8 GHz? YIKES, dude....

All races are timed stage events, so no rallycross (would be kind of a cool addition, though). The courses are great though (and some are VERY long). Making it through a big course with a good time is literally exhausting...in a good way. ;)

I need to update that CPU sig, I've since dropped it down to 4.2 GHz as running at 4.8 didn't really prove to be that beneficial for most games. Not worth the extra heat.

no one mentioned Iracing!?

best online racing by far, most accurate tracks, great physics
made by the same guy responsible for GPL..

but expensive

for rallying I still think Richard Burns will give you the best experience, if you can overlook the DX8 graphics.

Having built and driven various race cars in real life, it's difficult to understand how people who have never driven a race car, let alone any car at LeMans, Road America, Nurburgring, etc., can say that one driving game is more realistic than another. They all seem like video games to me. The most important thing is that you get the "feeling" of driving and the sensation of speed, which is kind of what it's all about.

Dirt Rally may not be the most "realistic" driving sim, but it is really fun to play.

I love cars and racing, but it's not realistic to have a full wheel and game setup, even though it would be pretty sweet. If I can get rid of the work on the computer, pick up the controller and go computer racing for an hour a day, I'm getting my money's worth.

I find it difficult to understand how people who have never driven a racing simulator with a quality wheel/pedal setup can say that any one driving game is not more realistic than another. ;)

<-- raced MR2s in LeMons/Chump at Nelson Ledges, Summit Point, and NH Motor Speedway and I'm working on an AER build this weekend.

If you're playing with a controller, then...yeah, it's not going to matter too much. The benefits of a proper sim are lost.

We say "realistic" because that's the best term to describe the driving characteristics.

Playing something like Project CARS where you have to properly break going into a corner and you're rewarded for a good apex is more realistic than something like GRID where you can just mash it and fly through everything.

It's just a word to describe the driving mechanics - - not imply that it is a perfect 1:1 representation of driving a real race car.

but expensive

This is the biggest factor keeping me from iracing, subscription pricing AND you have to pay per car and per track for anything besides the base cars/tracks.

It can get expensive fast.

I keep scanning Craigslist for a deal on a used Obutto cockpit - if that happens, I'll seriously consider buying iRacing and the tracks that I normally race on, just to maintain familiarity with the tracks/proper lines throughout the year. I don't want to spend the first half of my 1-2 actual races a year re-learning the track. :p

shift 2 unleashed

Ugh...the controls, though. It's improved greatly with handling mods, but still. Great concept, horrible execution on the controls. I think Project CARS improves on it in every way except with car selection / modification.

If I could have Shift 2: Unleashed car selection / modification with Project CARS handling, I would be a happy guy.

I know. It's so close to being good.

I do think it nails the experience of actually "racing" better than most other sims.

Ugh I completely forgot about iRacing, a huge money and time sink. Fun game though. There's also SimRaceway, which is kind of the answer for those who can't spend time and money on iRacing, it's a free2play game but some cars can be over $30 (like the Maclaren MP4/4).

Dirt Rally
GRiD Autosport (if you turn everything off)
Project Cars
Assetto Corsa
Even with everything turn off in Autosport, it's a little bit of an annoyance, it drives weird but I can't really explain it.

if you want Automobilista just wait a few more days, it will be available on Steam, but, from previous games the single player part of it is not all that interesting, and for online racing you need to join a league or something
but I really like diving on the Reiza games, their forcefeedback and physics are very enjoyable
