I have started a new job over the past few months which basically includes me doing a managerial style systems administrator / networking type position. It's a lot of work and I'm also learning a lot in the process. I work right beside our web developer (mostly asp) and coder, and was just thinking to myself today what I should maybe start to focus on for when I do decide to move in with my career path. I have a general CS/IT degree from a 4 year university and am basically looking for a speciality that is going to be in higher demand and that will pay well. Things I was considering:
- Also learn ASP.NET like my co-worker. MS is gaining popularity in the server market. I'm a big linux guy, but I see this happening gradually but surely. It doesn't mean Windows is better, but it's happening.
- Database Administrator. This is what I was thinking more around. More and more companies need DB admins as their DBs keep growing in size. With my background, if I learned SQL/Oracle/etc servers and querying at an expert level I know I'd be in demand.
- Java. Blech. I'd like to stay away from raw programming, but I've thought about it.
In the end I'd like to move to a managerial type position ASAP (maybe a project manager), but it's hard to do that when I'm only 24.
Thoughts?
