Most popular live broadcast platform?

I was wandering what the most popular live video streaming/broadcasting platform for things such as sports coverage is. I would guess that a peer to peer protocol would be the most capable to sustain bandwidth for best quality. So, the question is, what's the most popular one, which one do people use? Does it have acceptable quality? Thanks.
