Just pick and choose what you want that fits into your timeframe of "ten years".
You'll probably discount all of them anyway.

I like how they act like unleasing an Ultra Combo on someone three states away in Killer Instinct was a dream when it happened all the time on X-Band. I remember playing NOAKITEAM1 from Redmond, WA while in Newnan, GA on the beta launch day for X-BAND's KI support back in 1995 and I wasn't even signed up for the "Nationwide" plan. Also, playing on the Internet has disadvantages in a fast-reaction fighting game like KI. Online matchmaking that results in direct-dialing is still the lowest-latency way.

No, you tell me. You tell me what's so impressive on that list from the last 10 years that is more significant than Xbox Live. (e.g. Gamecube onward) But thanks for replying to my honest question in such a mature way.

I looked up X-band and it sounds pretty awesome. I probably never would've left my room if I could play Mortal Kombat with my friends online 🙂 Still though, it's an add-on peripheral from a third party that the vast majority of gamers never even knew about. It only supported a handful of games. And it only existed for a couple years.

Definitely ahead of its time, but I don't see that as the same as having proper online features integrated into the console itself. The bottom line is that MS was the first console manufacturer to make online play a major focus and not just an afterthought.

again bringing computers into a console discussion - totally irrelevant.

if xbox live wasn't innovative, why the hell is sony trying to play catchup with it with PSN and basically trying to copy it? they even have a pay service now for psn subscribers.

i'm pretty sure all the xbl subscribers over the past 2 weeks are also much MUCH happier with their service than the psn users are.

Bringing computers in is not irrelevant since what we are supposed to be discussing is innovation.

btw, I'll agree with you that xbox live is innovative, it made online gaming a mainstream entertainment phenomena.

I'd put it as the 3rd biggest innovation, #1 is the Atari 2600, #2 are the Wii controllers and how that created a new gaming market.

The thing is though, xbox live is mostly software, it doesn't have much of to do with manufacturing consoles, other than headphones and a mic, which arent new.

And it's built on Microsoft's already existing computer online services, live, bing, hotmail. So how do you reconcile that with your no computer discussion stance ?

I'm the one who showed gave you a list of evidence, you refuse to read it and ask me to read it to you...then sarcastically insist I'm the one who's mature?

Off the top of my head, IR/Pointer controls, gyros/accelerometers, glasses-free 3D.

I think Microsoft should be in the top 5 though, if only for Kinect.

Xbox Live being the cornerstone of your argument is kind of ludicrous. It's a handicapped version of PC gaming (IMO) and even if it wasn't, you saying that's one of the greatest innovations of the 2000s would be like if Nintendo added a KB/Mouse option to the Wii and I thought it revolutionized gaming.

Precisely. Xbox Live is a joke because it fools people into thinking they're getting something for their money. Do you know how many people tell me there is less lag on Live? Why would that be? It's a peer to peer service just like PSN or Wii online. It's not like your $50 a year pays for a warehouse of dedicated servers folks. That money goes straight into Bill Gates', and his cronies', pockets people.

OMG you posted a picture from Futurama of Fry with a smug look! You win! Live is the greatest thing ever!

Oh btw, cross game chat is INBOUND for PSN once it is back up & running.

And just in case anyone still wanted to argue this matter anymore, check the scoreboard up top. That may be the most lopsided poll I have ever seen anywhere.

Dude...you have mixed up with someone else. Please read my previous posts. I wasn't advocating Live, it's just the way you described as it paying money which would go directly into Bill Gates' pockets looked highly suspect, like you were accusing me of being completely anti-MS or something.

You really can't say anyone is anti-MS at this point. Almost all of us are either using a PC or an Xbox (I have both), but I'm just sick of people being so misinformed about Live. All it does is funnel your $50 a year into the pockets of billionaires.
